Duxford rumour

Was checking the updates on http://www.duxford-update.info/ and if you read the blurb on the news page at the bottom it says that it is rumoured a P-38 has arrived at Area 51.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

I was at Kermit Weeks shop a couple years ago. He had bought a P-38 from somewhere-S America I think and the idiot shippers snipped the tail booms in half in order to fit their transport!!!

Guess they are easier to take apart that way![/QUOTE]

You are not far from the truth…….

On a recent(ish) visit to Polk City My father and i spoke to Mr Weeks on this very (sore) subject….. I seem to remember the dock workers were left to load said AC into a container from the low-loader there and then on the dockside!!! How true this is i’m not sure(?) (there was some mention of sub-educational puertoricans with a liberal dose of expleteives mixed in) however in order to get the extra 17feet of lockheeds finest into the container they lopped the tails off with chainsaw and fire axe no less:eek:

Blair’s P-38 Putt Putt Maru is at Stallion 51 Maintance facility undergoing a complete overhaul, I saw the aircraft today. It will be staying at Kissimmee In his newly finished facility at Stallion 51. Also saw RN-201 and she looks stunning as usual surrounded by 5 Mustangs and a P-40 in Stallion’s main hanger. The folks at there are exercising her on a regular basis.

Also of note during my visit was a large collection of vintage cars that belong to Mr. Blair. Restored corvetts, thunderbirds, cameros, Mercedes, and some stunning very vintage Bentleys. I understand they will go on display in the car section of his new museum.

I was told that PL344 has just arrived with John Romain at ARCO and will be getting a complete overhaul and respray into new and accurate colors. Hince the UNKNOWN container at DX’s area 51.

I was also told by folks at Stallion that Blair’s Flugwerk 190 and Spanish 109 will be coming across the atlantic in time for the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends in Fall of 07 and then move into the new living history center at Kissimmee.

If anyone has the opportunity to visit Stallion I highly suggest it. They are very kind to let you up close and personal and their engineers are very friendly and informative.

Blair has completely leveled the former Flying Tigers Musuem property adjacent to Stallion 51 and is completing a new display hanger that will be first class when complete and uniquely different from any other museum.

The Blair and Stallion 51 Facilities are immaculate and the staff take great pride in their environment …. Well done !

Cheers,

Austin

would be nice if it was tom blairs p-38, but i’m afraid its probably wishful thinking!! the thought of 2 of them flying together would be amazing, but i would imagine its his mkix as its due for some work at arco.:)

Not really old news… when the plane appeared at Nellis it was already in “new hands”. The Aeroplane mentionned the project. And I got confirmed today by Simon Brown, head of Provenance Fighter Sales (the “new” owner) but who wrote they were still in the planning phase.

Sounds like her trip to Duxford is more than a rumor. See link affirming trip and giving details. Though you know how that goes…the best laid plans!

Hmm,

I think this may be old news, notwithstanding the assumed date of the article. The aircraft changed hands last year, and is no longer based at Middlesboro.

I wouldnt hold your breath!

P-38 Put down

I wouldn’t get too excited about a reported P-38 at DX.

I am reminded of a little tale of many years ago when Bill Ross, owner of a P-38 and out to impress, proudly showed Doug Bianchi, at Booker, a photograph of his P-38 in flight, head on and up close to the photo-ship with both props stopped and feathered.

Doug, quite a wag and not a great fan of the Allison and its reliability in his experience, riposted that he would be more impressed if both of the engines had actually been running. πŸ™‚

On the subject of Duxford rumours the Duxford Update website says TFC’s P51C is soon to depart. May have missed this one but anyone know what the story is here?

It’s been sold to Jim Beasley in the US – http://www.airshows.org.uk/news

But i dont think you could get a P38 in a 20 footer ?

curlyboy

We couldn’t get a P38 in as it was already full of a new batch of Cybermen to feed the ARC coalface πŸ˜€

You CAN fit a P38 in a twenty footer if you are not the one who has to put it back together!:dev2:

Those 40ft containers sure are deceptive, must be the “Tardis” principal they use in Area 51. Still you all know best……………….
Never knew P-38’s had a 266 up front though:p

The reason i remember was because i was going to start one of those annoying ‘is it for Legends?’ threads that randomly appear (at least it would not be a ship this time!!) and i took a pic of it just in case.

But i dont think you could get a P38 in a 20 footer ?
