Duxford scumbag…

A man who faked an illustrious Army career has been found guilty of perverting the course of justice.

John Livesey, 57, of Purley-on-Thames, Berkshire, was convicted in 2004 for claiming £30,000 in benefits while he worked at a museum in Cambridgeshire.

He received a suspended jail term after the court heard he had served in the Parachute Regiment.

But in a second trial, Peterborough Crown Court heard Livesey had lied and he had been in the Catering Corps.

Livesey, known as Jack, told friends and colleagues he had served with distinction in the Parachute Regiment and that he had been awarded a medal for gallantry.

The military historian, who worked at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Cambridgeshire, gained the admiration of war veterans.

He claimed he had seen action in the Falklands War and carried out six tours of Northern Ireland.

However his army career had been in the Catering Corps between 1971 and 1974.

It is a very strange story. All he did was deny it and disappear from those forums. The owners of FC had given them both ample time to explain themselves. They still maintain both of their registrations and it is open for them to explain themselves. They haven’t since being rumbled.

The thing that made it even more strange is that serving members of HM Forces based at Coningsby are members of the forum. Serving members at Coningsby even passed on their finding to the Mod/RAF Police. She never posted images of herself in full uniform or flying gear, but simply wearing 41 Squadron T-shirts. Many of the enthusiasts are also in contact with Typhoon pilots and pass on photographs on a regular basis and especially from the low flying routes. Nobody could work out who this 29 Squadron female Pilot was and not even, at the time, the sole female Typhoon Pilot.

The top brass and those MPs and ex-high rankers associated with the Save RAF Cottesmore campaign were simply unaware that they were making such claims on aviation forums. Neil Allison simply denied it, closed ranks on the Cottesmore campaign Facebook, removed any posts pertaining to it, banned those that made them and carried on as if nothing had happened.

He closed ranks that much that some gullible members of the campaign believed it was a political smear campaign to discredit their founder and work.

Walter Mitty characters of the highest order!

The idiot also got into trouble with the Red Arrows over a poster he made to publicise a Cottesmore march.

That is a strange story TeeJ, as someone leading a save a Cottesmore campaign (or indeed any base) there is nothing wrong with that head being a civilian. But to make those claims is just utterly bizarre and would very quickly lead to distancing from the stations’ top brass who would rumble what is going on – thus completely ruining the campaign for everyone.

I’ve never understood why people do such things? As an ex-Serviceman I find it abhorrent.

The individuals that get me are civilians who pretend that they, or others, are members of HM Forces.

Take this chap for instance, Neil Allison (See video link at 0:24 timeline). Neil Allison is the Chairman of the Save RAF Cottesmore Campaign.

For years he and his wife claimed on various aviation enthusiast forums that his wife was an RAF Tornado GR4 Pilot. Many enthusiasts were taken in and none were the wiser as the Tornado force has a fair few female in their ranks. He would even inform enthusiasts out spotting at RAF Coningsby that his wife was flying based purely on female voices noted on the radio scanners.

Their downfall was when she suddenly ‘converted’ onto Typhoons! He even published images on the forums of his wifes Typhoon solo taken from a tanker. The alarm bells started ringing as nobody based at RAF Coningsby could work out who this new female Typhoon Pilot was.

Here he is posting as Flying Figgis declaring his Wife’s Typhoon solo! His Wife posts as LMP on the thread. He mantained the ruse for a couple of weeks before taking down the image of the Typhoon.

Even after being rumbled he still flaunted himself as the head of the Save RAF Cottesmore Campaign and appeared on TV.

Here he is at 0:24

Goodness only knows what he was telling those high profile people featured in his blog and in support of the campaign?

Twenty or so years ago, the publisher of the largest newspaper in Arizona was outed for a fake military career.
He claimed to be a retired Lt. Colonel and a fighter pilot.
Asa local VIP he was invited to many civic events including some at the local air bases. Occasionaly, he’s wear a USAF “mess dress” uniform with all this medals (the only USAF uniform where you wore medals…albeit miniature ones…instead of ribbons).

He claimed to be a veteran of the Korean war where he crashed a Mustang and also Vietnam.
It was a very good pilot, but never had any militray service.
Finally, someone did the math and realized he could not have been a service pilot while working his way up the newspaper industry.

It took guts to carry on the charade at an air base, a well placed question from a service member could have easily exposed his fraud. His obits speculate he may have made up his record for simple business reasons and to match the accomplishments of his brother, a WWII Marine aviator who was killed in a training mishap.

It wasn’t illegal at the time, but he did lose his job and suffered great embarassment.

Sad isn’t it…. I have a medal BTW LOL somewhere….. it got chucked in a drawer when it arrived and has stayed in one ever since….. would be embarrased to ever put it on, I got it for “holidaying” in Northern Ireland, the Army worked for theirs and deserved them, I didn’t.

That is so funny Hindenburg.

Catering Corps?

Interesting result there, I wouldn’t have expected a prison term (really, our justice system just seems so arbitrary, but let us not discuss this here :diablo:).

Of course the sentence is for lying to court rather than specifically for claiming to be in the military.

Years ago, a bloke at work claimed to have been a famous fighter pilot in the Polish Air Force early in WWII. Asked him what he flew and he claimed it was a Polish mass-produced fighter “Very much like Spitfire” but somehow he couldn’t remember what it was called. Funny too how his English suddenly seemed to fail him when I showed him a book telling how the only Polish fighter in service in any qauntity then was the PZL P11.

BBC News report…

Army fantasist John Livesey jailed for lying to court

A military historian who faked an illustrious Army career has been jailed for three years.
John Livesey, 57, had been found guilty at Peterborough Crown Court of perverting the course of justice.
Livesey, of Nursery Gardens, Purley-on-Thames, Berkshire produced false references after he was convicted of benefit fraud in 2004.
Passing sentence, Judge Nic Madge said: “Much of your life since 1974 has been a lie.”
Livesey, formerly of Springfield Road, Sawston, Cambridgeshire was caught out after he falsely claimed £30,000 in benefits while working at Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

For decades Livesey, known as Jack, told friends, colleagues and his closest family that he had served with distinction in the Parachute Regiment.
He even claimed to have advised production crews working on the film Saving Private Ryan and TV series Band of Brothers.

‘Personality disorders’

In fact, his Army career amounted to a stint in the Catering Corps between 1971 and 1974.
Livesey’s lies came to light following his conviction for benefit fraud in 2004 when he produced references from genuine veterans who had been taken in by him.
Roger Harrison, in mitigation, said his client had been diagnosed with histrionic personality and dependent personality disorders.
This meant Livesey could not tell “fact from fiction”, Mr Harrison said.
He added: “He had established himself as a respected military historian. Obviously he has now lost that reputation and lost his occupation.”
Mr Harrison said his client was physically disabled and had restricted mobility.

Suicide attempt

Previous psychiatric reports found no evidence of such disorders and the judge questioned Livesey’s physical disabilities.
Livesey told those who knew him he reached the rank of Colour Sergeant and that he was awarded a medal for gallantry after serving in the Falklands and Northern Ireland.
In truth, he was discharged from the army in 1974 after he threw himself from a bedroom window in an apparent suicide attempt following a four-month spell in Northern Ireland.
Livesey denied perverting the course of justice, telling jurors he had not been aware the references were being submitted by his partner Bridget Pollard, who herself had been taken in by his lies.
Livesey told the court he had constructed a “fantasy world” to compensate for his early discharge from the Army on medical grounds.

As well as jailing Livesey for three years, the judge ordered that he pay £3,500 in prosecution costs.

Man who faked Army career jailed

A military historian who faked an illustrious Army career has been jailed for three years after a court was told he suffered a disorder preventing him telling fact from fiction.
For decades John Livesey, known as Jack, told friends, colleagues and his closest family that he had served with distinction in the Parachute Regiment.
He even claimed on his website that he had advised production crews working on the film Saving Private Ryan, whereas his army career amounted to a stint in the Catering Corps between 1971 and 1974.
The 57-year-old’s lies came to light following his conviction for benefit fraud in 2004 when he produced references from genuine veterans who had been taken in by him. Earlier this month he was found guilty of perverting the course of justice at Peterborough Crown Court.

Passing sentence, Judge Nic Madge said: “Much of your life since 1974 has been a lie.”
Roger Harrison, in mitigation, said his client had been diagnosed with histrionic personality and dependent personality disorders. He said this meant his client could not tell “fact from fiction”.
Mr Harrison said his client was physically disabled and had restricted mobility, but previous psychiatric reports found no evidence of such disorders and Judge Madge questioned Livesey’s physical disabilities.
Judge Madge said: “One day after court I saw Mr Livesey near the court building and his mobility seemed significantly better than it did in court.”
He added that previously medical examinations had found Livesey was prone to exaggerating his psychological and physical conditions.

As well as jailing Livesey for three years, the judge ordered that he pay £3,500 in prosecution costs.

Bloke at my local was big upping himself with a lot of talk about being SF in Vietnam. Two weeks later I was there with a mate who flew Hueys in Vietnam & suddenly all this pillocks stories were about “a friend”, not himself…
Then there was the slight problem that if he has actually served in Vietnam he would have been about 9 at the time…

It’s an offence to Impersonate a police officer, is there not one also for the offence these thieves?, who dress up as x Forces personnel?.

I suppose the problem is here that if caught they could easily argue that they were a re-creationist just playing along. Obviously there are already laws about obtaining money by deception but stopping people from making up stories about their past for no obvious gain apart from self-gratification is unlikely to ever come to pass.

A long while back a fake (USN I believe, but stand to be corrected) Officer took advantage of St Mawgans excellent hospitality, before being found out by incorrect medals, some of which were plastic.

Edit- after a quick Google =

A man gained access to an RAF base after posing as a US Navy officer.

Mark Looney, a restaurant bouncer from Brighton, posed as an American Navy hero called Lieutenant Looney and spent five days at RAF St Mawgan, Cornwall.

He impressed RAF officers with tales of his daring exploits in Bosnia and was rumbled only when a visiting woman US Army officer spotted one of his medals was plastic.

Care to explain? PM will do….

no need, it wasnt a dig, just a friendly bit of banter 🙂
as i know your aware of how some people feel about a friend of mine, (not you personally)

i was talking to an Ex para yesterday at NEAM, he had just been to darlington, where he met a chap in full SAS gear, walking round the town centre,, (not sure if there was a display on in darlo yesterday?) anyway, after 3 questions he was caught out, not to mention the insignia he was wearing was all wrong and he apparently looked like someone who just purchased the stuff at an army navy stall in the local market and stuck it on

i just dont get why people are so disrespectful to our military, it really is an insult

He could be responsible for thousands of deaths…:D

Likewise I had a friend who was in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam era.
He didn’t serve there, just in at that time.

His job?
Dental assistant.

I joked that he saw more blood than most of the Harley-driving, bearded, multi-tatooed, pony-tail wearing professional Vietnam “veterans” out there.

not everyone who seems a bit “odd” is full of lies though 🙂 ey JT

Care to explain? PM will do….

The fellow I was referring to claimed to have served in the Falklands and Iraq, sustained injuries, collected a medal, even claimed special forces duty. All utter tosh according to the relevant regiment, who had never heard of him, and didn’t appear in their list of Falklands vets let alone medal holders. (I had distant family in said regiment and it was easy enough to check).

There is no excuse for pretending to be someone you’re not. the guy from DX should have been proud enough to have served his country and been collecting monies for those in need. The fact that he was man enough to be in the armed forces is good enough for most. I care not that he never shot anyone or came under fire.

I was a lowly aircraft mechanic, low rank, and served for only 7 years before PVR-ing. I’m proud to have served dispite never leaving the country and never firing a shot in anger. The closest I came to death was a rather annoyed policeman whom I nearly ran over with a Landrover… different story for another time… I did get a medal though… it turns out that I was in the right place for long enough to get an utterly worthless Queen’s Jubilee medal. Still, it makes a good paperweight.

My grandfather was in the Army during WW2, in the western desert for the duration no less. The guy was a hero. End of……. He was an MT driver alledgedly…….
