Duxford Visit ~ 08Oct10

With the low cloud and mist covering everywhere, I didn’t think anything would fly at all today but from about 14.00 onwards it started to lift and clear. Surprise, the Tiger Moths of Classic Wings were first up closely followed by the Stearman. If any one wanted to see a Spitfire flying this weekend, should have gone today as Rats was flying the ARCo T9. Several times. Cliff Spink took the F-86 for a bit of a spin and by that time the light down the M11 end was superb. Two Tucanos’ arrived for the air show and a bit later as I was leaving, 2 Hawks turned up and the display Hawk appeared to be performing what I presume was the ‘Tactical Demo’ routine. Plenty of flat turns and wheels down. The RNHF Sea Fury will not be appearing on Sunday, famous last words, and as for the Swordfish, I’ll wait until the wheels touch down first.

Thanks Rhubarb. I just wondered as I’d seen your thread from 2008 asking about details of the scheme. Personally I think the contrast will look great.

A question for Rhubarb. Is the plan to still repaint her in 1968 BoB colours as Red 3/8?

PeterW

No, there is no plan for that. It was a possibility in the very early stages of the rebuild but the owner decided he wanted a desert scheme, and that was at least 2 years before the idea of repainting G-BWUE came about when it changed owners. The Buchon was completely strippped to bare metal and after airframe work was completed we repainted he into the desired colour scheme which actually differs substantially from the hideous CAF applied scheme it wore when imported. The colours we have used are all authentic shades in a matt finish. There is still a lot of detailing to be completed and it requires the white band aft of the spinner to be applied and the Pik-As (Ace of Spades) emblem to go onto the engine cowlings as well. I’m sure when it is completed there will be a nice visual contrast between the two schemes if the opportunity arises to fly them as a pair occurs. Maybe the event will be captured by one of the air-to-air photo guys as well.

Brian, great photo’s as always. Thanks for sharing. On the wings of ARco T9 just on the edge of the roundles is what looks like an alumiunm disc, are these the wing tank’s filler caps? just looked a bit too far outboard !

Steve.

Steve, Yup these are probably the filler caps, PV202 having the ‘Nick Grace’ style wet wing mod. Originally done by a mob on the IOW many years back!

Cheers, C.

Great shots again.

I wonder how many flying hours did EP120 since the last time her engine was removed?

I havel lost track, how many Buchons are flying in the UK and which is the former Breighton one?

At the moment, only one, which is the former Breighton one (“Yellow 10”). The other is the former N109ME from the Commemorative Air Force, re-registered as G-AWHE, which is the reg worn when that aircraft flew as part of the fleet used in the filming of Battle of Britain in 1968….

Great photo’s, thank you for sharing 🙂

Quick question: Which Spitfire is that in the first photo with the Buchon? Is it ‘631 from BBMF? Or has she already returned to Coningsby? I did initially think it was the Rolls Royce Spit PS853 but I assume she’s still grounded.

Fantastic stuff as usual Brian, thanks for sharing 🙂 Could some kind soul save me the effort of firing up Google and fill me in on the identity of the Buchon in the first shot please?

TIA

Fantastic images!
I’m currently thinking of buying a DSLR and telephoto – the 550s specs sound great, but how does the build quality feel?

Beautiful pictures as always Brian. That first shot of the Buchon is very nice. Between your choice of camera angle and the camouflaging effect of the paint job you don’t notice how ugly a Buchon really is. :diablo:
