Hi all,
I arrived late yesterday & didn’t get a chance to have a good poke round the hangers. But I niticed that TFC’s Yak 9 restoration has been moved & the I16 wasn’t there.
Any clues?
Steve.

“The Griffon’s still out of the MkXVIII.”
*Pedantic cap on…*

Good point Eddie. The same thing crossed my mind a few minutes ago, only about 24 hours late. 🙁

Just a thought – as I recall, Cosford’s hangars are lit with yellowish electric lights, whereas clearly from that picture, the Duxford hangars have a lot of natural light. Perhaps that’s why it looks blue?

Sounds a good term for them
By: jbs - 11th October 2004 at 14:10
So what are they then, 3’s, 9’s, or still 11’s ?
I’m confused, give me a Spitfire any day

11s. 3s are different animals entirely. Perhaps they should be called ‘Yak-11 (mod)’ or some such.
Before long, someone will be claiming combat history for them 🙁
But the Yak-11 did start life as a development of the Yak-3 airframe, being originally designated Yak-3UTI when it first flew in 1945.

As are 9’s
I took a look at the Yak 11 firewall forward of the OFMC Yak11/3/9 thingy whatsit the other day, still store in the UK.

3’s

Yep, The Yak 9’s that have been an TFC’s Hanger for years are Yak 11’s. One belonged to TFC, the other to the OFMC.They were sent to Russia years ago for conversion to Yak 9’s in the original Yakvolev factory. They are to be fitted with Allison Engines. There has been some trouble with either the quality of the engine mountings or the requirements from the CAA. Its something like that anyway.
OFMC’s has gone to NZ to be completed and is due to return here 2005/6.

Not trying to be smart, but isn’t it a Yak 3 that started out originally as a Yak 11
Exactly what I was about to say, very much like this thing that OFMC are apparently going to operate in the UK next year.

But in answer to the original question, I don’t know where it is either, but Steve’s thoughts about having to make room for other projects seems a good bet

Yes noticed this to. i believe the Yak 9 restiration is in Hanger 3 and for the whereabouts of the I-15 i dont know

The I-16 was hidden behind the Ju52 in hangar two north. No sign of the Yak 9 though, although I’d guess it’s probably been moved out of the main hangar so they can get all the flyers in for winter maintenance. Getting a bit crowded in there these days… 🙂
