Duxford's Heinkel

Can anyone give me the low-down on the He111 that is/was at Duxford?
Haven’t heard about it for a while – Is it still there? Restoration plans? Where’s it destined to end up?

Thanks in advance.

Rich.

i know this is an old thread but does anyone have an update on the paul allen he111 project that is supposedly being restored in Norfolk? Is it being done by the same guys who are doing the fw190 and me 262?

Not much of an update i’m afraid- but i remember reading somewhere that Paul Allen is having the ‘2-111 restored to fly and with Junkers Jumo 211 engines

Hi Rich82,

Whilst we are on the subject of He 111s, where are the remains gone of the He 111 which was put out grass at the end of Duxfords runway at the Tank
Museums end of the field ? some years ago. Scrapped or stored in the vaults
of some secret shed being watched over by Bobs Brother.

Reply.

It’s the Imperial War Museum not Disneyland! The 109 is displayed like that because it’s portraying the end result of her last encounter with the RAF. There are plenty of ex Russian 109’s which could be put back in the air at a price.

i seem to remember my father harping on about the fact that its all original, which is why its special, they restored the one side to depict how it was when found, and the other left, to give the Then and Now impression. if i had the money, straight back into the air for her 😀

Crashed 109E.

interesting idea with the 109, i quite like the way its displayed at the moment though, i suppose not everyones cup of tea 🙂

Hi Nashio966,

Very true, maybe they could have a wheels- down one year (with un-bent prop), then a wheels-up back to field scene the following year. Then again maybe not.

Hi PeterW, And you know what would be even better, the Ju52 and 109E
outside with the He 111 against those big green lovable hanger-doors, great backgrounds
to get a cameo shot. Of course they would have to rescue the 109E from that crashed enermy aircraft in a field somewhere in England scene, with its
sad bent prop and wheels-up display. How about putting it back on its feet
and pushing it out the hanger now and again. Maybe have your photo taken
in it for a modest fee like the Fw 190 this year for worthy causes.
Just a thought.

He 111.

It was moved into the restoration hanger a couple of months ago so i hope that means it’s next in line for a full restoration.

I know its really a Spanish CASA but I’d like to see it in German markings, maybe those it had for the filming of BoB, that way no one can see it’s not authentic!! Would look great along side the 109 and JU52 in the Battle of Britain display.

Pic of it before it was moved here http://s110605900.websitehome.co.uk/hangar-5/yh2-10.htm

A CASA Cockpit, centre section & ex-Duxford outer wings, elevators & 1 engine & other parts where on loan to S.Yorks Aircraft Museum when they were at Firbeck until offered for sale by the owner. The museum had restored the cockpit prior to the sale but I believe they could not afford the asking price. I cannot tell you where the parts are for certain(Germany or Austria I believe).

Bruce,

IIRC, it was in Austria, for sale as a potential flyer project.

Did you receive my PM? Or is you inbox full?

Cheers

The aircraft is/was an He111P

It has moved around a lot, shedding parts as it moved.

The aft fuselage, tailplane, elevators and some forward fusleage parts, plus some outer wing parts survive alongside a number of parts of Spanish CASA.

Not sure where it is now though.

Apologies for kicking a moribund thread – does being dead a week make it a zombie thread yet?

Steve,
I really cannot be sure where any items from the EAG ended up after I left. I do remember a vague comment by an interested party, that much ended up with a private collection near Epping.

Perhaps the items from the Fjord were spread about to several museums? On the display board for the surviving fin at Duxford it mentions who recovered the items, but I fail to remember who by myself.

I have unearthed my copy of the EAG’s information book.

According to that, the Heinkel parts I remember – I recall a rear fuselage section, though as I was an anklebiter at the time I can’t be sure – came from the IWM itself. Presumably these, then, have been returned to the IWM?

The aircraft itself was a bit of an enigma – supposedly an He111E that crashed onto the frozen Storvatnet lake in Norway in April 1940 following an engine fire. However it was wearing markings that did not appear until September 1940, and did not have the E version’s elliptical wing. A google tells me that After the Battle No 6 carried an article and pics of the recovery – anyone got one lurking?

I’ve also found these – the fin and an engine are still at DX. There is a suggestion that the rest was scrapped – possibly all it was fit for after all those years outside, I fear, but the thread that post linked to has died.

Does that help, or just muddy the waters?

I thought the original intention was for the duxford 111 to fly when OFMC imported it?
After Mark Hanna’s tragic accident the 111 was sold to IWM.

Exactly what i’d been told.

That doesn’t suprise me at all – especially given that Sir John was in the Ack-ack during WW2, so he’d have been interested.

Yes, I knew he had gone – a shame, a gentleman in the old sense of the word.

Are you sure about the Heinkel? I thought the Spains Hall Hurricane was an OTU machine from Debden?

Adrian

Ah ha, it wasn’t the Hurricane I was thinking about then, you know the story, lone Heinkel attacks Courtaulds factory at Bocking, Hurricane and Heinkel shoot each other down, Heinkel crew land in a stick across Finchingfield green, pilot coincidentally breaking leg on war memorial, Hurricane pilot, Canadian/Polish killed, Heinkel down at Gainsford End, Hurricane?????

Some of the bits are/were at Spains Hall, they were presented to Sir John Ruggles Brise, he showed them to me once during one of his epic guided tours, I definately remember handling a really shiny piston from the Merlin.
Did you know he passed away earlier this year, I worry for the future of the house and it’s amazing contents, aviation or otherwise.
By the way, I don’t miss living in Finchingfield one bit.
Incidentally, did anyone excavate the real Heinkel 111 that the Hurricane shot down, I believe it was somewhere near Gainsford End.

[QUOTE=adrian_gray;1142123]Interesting to hear that you were a member of the EAG, Denis. The year before you joined, at a highly impressionable age (7!), I watched the remains of a Hurricane being dug out of a field at Spains Hall, Finchingfield (wouldn’t mind knowing where those bits went – anyone know?). From that moment on, there was no chance I’d ever grow out of being interested in ‘planes!
