Duxfords new arrivals!

While its great to see a tornado being donated to Duxford, the policy of charging for exhibits for the RAFM seems a bit daft!

What will Duxford get next? How many exhibits have the IWM aquired that are uniqie to Europe, Sr71, F111, F15, F105 etc?

I hope they get an IL2 – preferaly a flying one!

RE: Duxfords new arrivals!

Knowing Duxford you never know – after all who else could have got a complete B24?

But then it would only end up outside rotting anyway, unless Duxford got one and stuck it in a hanger, but there’s no guarantee of that ever happening….so it’s probably better they stay where they are until the UK museums get their arses in gear and are able to look further ahead than next year.

Ant – The is an example flying with Hawkair at Terrace in British Columbia. They also operate a Carvair. Most have ended up in Australia and New Zealand as they were some of the last places that they were operated in. It’s completely down to the apathy of British
museums that we don’t have on in the U.K.

RE: Duxfords new arrivals!

I remember seeing the Freighter at Heathrow in 1995 when there was an open day staged by BA.Also in attendance was a DH Devon/Dove,Air Atlantique DC7 and DC3 and an RAF VC.10.I belive the Mosquito RR299 was also meant to attend but it either failed to show or it arrived after I left.I was fortunate enought to be able to wander around several of the aircraft, including Concorde G-BOAG and a QANTAS B747-400.A great day by all accounts!
I live near Heathrow and I was surprised to see the Freighter fly only once.On that occasion she was coming in on 27R with an engine that was misfiring extrememly badly.
Personally I think the Freighter is a very characteristic aeroplane that we ought to have an example of here in the UK.It’s a pity that there are a number of Freighters that have been left to rot in far corners of the globe, examples in NZ and Australia coming to mind.
Incidentally,I’d heard quite recently that there was still an active Freighter on the Canadian register. Is this so?

RE: Duxfords new arrivals!

She had been based in the U.K for about a year – at various stages operating out of Heathrow and Enstone. She is sadly missed – it’s about time we had a replacement either airworthy or not!

Thanks David, I knew there was a ‘New’ in the place, must have been Newfoundland!.Am I right in saying that she was the only airworthy example as was to be based in the UK. I remember the day of the crash as i was sat a Fairford waiting for her to arrive for the RIAT.

She came from Canada. The fuselage was scrapped with the cockpit now being a children’s plaything. The wing was at Enstone for quite some while afterwards and with a bit of luck might still be in existance.

RE: Duxfords new arrivals!

As it’s very much trying to be the British ‘NASM’ maybe they could get something of relevance to the U.K .
The Short Skyvan-Carvair-Bristol Freighter-DC-4-Lockheed Hercules C.1 all spring to mind !
