I just tried to register with Aircraftspruce, but the only country offered is Canada, so maybe they won’t sell to the UK where I am.

A swaging tool could be made from aluminum rod with a hole drilled in it.
The commercial ones are steel, but aluminum would work for a few of them.
Be sure to click on the picture beside the C-clamp.
It shows what some of the dies look like. The table matches the die with the grommet and fastener.
Get a few grommets and try a few practice ones.
It’ll be interesting to hear how you make out.
Cheers

Andy,
Very interesting! Their C-clamp wouldn’t work in my application, which is in the back of avionics boxes maybe 18″ deep, so it wouldn’t reach far enough. I’m wondering whether a swaging tool could be improvised on the end of a long rod which could be tapped home. Or maybe I give up on grommets and just use snap rings or circlips.

Hey Andy.
Here a set of tools is illustrated.
Look around their website and it shows how to select the correct grommets.

I have one set of grommet installation tools.
They are each dedicated to a single size and style of grommet.
If you have multiple sizes then you require multiple tools. There are different ones for countersunk / butterfly finger style, etc.
The snap ring / circlip method can work.
They accomplish the same job, which is retaining the fastener when it is undone.
Best of luck

Andy,
That’s a very interesting and useful video! Unfortunately it doesn’t cover use of grommets, but I’ll look at the other videos shown alongside.
I guess a circlip could be used if I can’t find any of the proper snap rings.
I’m hoping to find some fasteners in the UK, but if I can’t I’ve found a source in the US with an ebay shop. It lists fasteners, springs and grommets, but not snap rings or installation tools unless I’ve not spotted them.

Installing the grommets require special tools.
They are kind of like a die with a specialized punch to upset the grommet and secure it and the camloc portion of the fastener in place.
An alternative can be to use a snap ring or even a split washer.

Have you contacted DZUS in the UK? Why not contact Dzus Fastener Europe Ltd Address: Farnham Trading Estate Farnham, Surrey GU9 9PL
Phone: 01252 714422 Fax: 01252 712738 Website: dzus.com. They have been in that area of Surrey for many years. I recall, at one time located close the old VOKES filters works unless my memory is slipping again!
A Google search suggests that a company named RHF Hopwood Fasteners at Stockport seem to be but one of many ‘appointed’ UK Distributors. But possibly there’s a company archivist at Farnham who could come up with the paperwork you need!
