Has anyone seen the 1942 film Eagle Squadron? Is it any good?
I have a 1942 review from RNZAF Contact magazine which says that it is extremely realistic, to the point where none of the cast were allowed to wear make-up so they looked right. And the filmmakers sent cameramen to Britain to film 15,000 feet of real combat footage taken with an Eagle Squadron for the film.
However the rest of the film was seemingly made in the USA. Did they take Hurricanes to the USA to make the airfield scenes?
Has this film been released on DVD anywhere?

Try and get a copy of The Debden Eagles,4th fighter group in world war 2 by Garry Fry.1970.
This was a softback book published sometime before the hardback book he did with Jeff Ethel.
isbn 0-9600376-1-6.
It has many rare photos from early days on Hurricanes, through to end of war p-51s.
As the spitfire interests you Daz it contains lots of picture of early aircraft with the odd sized roundels and a picture of a Mk Vb still operated at debden long after the base had converted onto the P-47.
I highly recommended it,try and get yourself a copy.

I can recommend ‘Spitfires, Thunderbolts and Warm Beer’ by Philip D. Caine. This is the story of LeRoy Gover and is a very ‘human’ tale which not only describes his military service with the RAF (133 Sq) and the USAAF but also includes his ‘off duty’ adventures. (The latter describes how his Air Force cap got burnt when he used it to shade a light bulb whilst on ‘manoeuvres’ with his girl-friend!)
I believe the book was published in 1995 and the ISBN number is 0-02-881115-1
According to a note in the book, Caine also wrote two others that may be of interest – (‘American Pilots in RAF’ and ‘The WWII Eagle Squadrons’) – but I have no other information on these books.

Tumult in the Clouds by James A Goodson.
think you’ll like it Daz, well written and with a very poignant piece about a visit to the Home Guard.
