East Berllin Airport has intact buried Luftwaffe aircraft

I hope a lot of folk have noticed this item.

If this turns out to be the case, there could be some exceedingly valuable airframes there.

I remember chatting around 1984 with an ex-US army guy who made his living driving Pershings around the Black Forest in the mid 70’s. He claimed to have gone into a hole in the ground somewhere in West Germany and found a space with intact german aircraft. I didn’t take it too seriously, but now I begin to wonder…

I know that the aircraft buried under ice are not going to turn up every where, but, and I don’t know the economics at the end of the war, but maybe it was cheaper to bury aircraft rather than sell them even for scrap, after all when ww1 finished did they not burn a load of aircraft as know one wanted them? Admittedly string, canvas and wood aint a lot of good to anyone but aluminium and iron are, However there must have been loads of scrap metal about in the form of guns shells jeeps whatever so I can imagine that metal prices were rock bottom. And after ww2 petrol was still rationed so why waste it by pouring it over stuff and setting fire to it when you can just dig a big hole and end of problem. Getting back to the aircraft under the ice… I am sure that after the aircraft all put down there, if they wanted too, they could have got some if not all the aircraft off the ice cap the following year or something, but it was probley cheaper to leave them all there, as p38’s and B17’s were probley “10 a Penney” just like spitfires and lancaster’s and every other aircraft at that time. I am only guessing all this here. Not a very good argument I know, but I think there is still a lot of stuff waiting to be found. 🙂

While it’s unlikely that complete and inhibited airframes would be found after so many years, there are still things turning up. The cache of engines at Frankfurt last year, the Spitfire in an Indian river bank in January, the Bf109 also in India, a large Stirling section at Arnhem. Even here in the UK, there are still parts out there. You just need to know where to look.

Pershings

I misconstrued the question as I’m far from an expert on army gear and the question had me wondering if there was some armoured carrier for Pershings I didn’t know about! Obviously then, he was driving the transporter. Hard to imagine an armoured carrier for something that big now that I think about it…

The M-26 Pershing MBT had gone out of front line service long before the 1970’s. One would have to assume he was carting around Pershing missiles.

No idea. I just know he told me about bashing around in the forests with tactical missiles while in not exactly a sober frame of mind.

But to the main subject… if that article in the Scotsman is correct, there could be quite a stash under that airport. I hope they publish when the analysis of the old STASI files is completed.

A couple of years back they unearthed a stash of WWII aero engines whilst doing building work a Frankfurt Main airport. It was reported in Flypast if I remember correctly. Whilst not complete, ready to go 109s, it proves there is still stuff out there.

There is a website, which I can’t find at present, by some guy in the states who followed up rumours about buried aircraft & recovered substantial sections from a P38 & P40. They were pretty mashed up though. I’ll post it if I find it.
