East Fortune Airshow On or Off

Well after almost booking a hotel and stuff for Duxford I just heard earlier that the G8 summit member will not be flying into Edinburgh amidst security fears.

My problem with this is that not only have East Fortune cancelled their airshow and no doubt in due time we will hear if its still off or if it is back on. But my problem is how many thousands of pounds have Edinburgh or the government wasted on training the police etc etc and by doing studies etc. just to be told we dont want to use Edinburgh anyway.

Surely this has wasted a lot of peoples time and effort especially on the part of East Fortune and how far advanced have the cancellation plans gone so far ie how many aircraft have already booked for other airshows because East Fortune no longer required them.

Anyone any news?

I doubt of any more than 1/2 doz light a/c could land and sit at Archerfield. Its not a place the public could get into. At a Golf Tournament at Gullane? they landed helicopters there but I think it was in a field not at the Dukes airstrip.

The best way would be to use the entire (except microlight) East Fortune Airfield but the Sunday Market must earn the owner of that part too much to give it up. The airfield site ie all the fields and the runways etc is owned by a number of different people and if the Museum cant get them to co-operate no-one else can. The existing runway would need work done on it to enable aircraft bigger than Cessnas to land as there are potential obstruction. The PFA moved to Glenrothes last year as they couldnt get flying in to EF for their annual fly in sorted out.

I have a friend in the Borders police, and they are still very much involved with the G8,as are probably ALL forces in Scotland. All their leave has been cancelled over this period.

My devious mind led me to the Red Arrows show calendar site, because I wondered if perhaps they were the REAL reason for the cancellation of the EF show. They don’t show EF on their calendar, and makes me wonder if it was EVER there! You get my drift? If they couldn’t get the Arrows, then who would go to the show?(thinking general public here). If I am totally wrong, then I apologise, but I’m VERY suspicious!

OSH, I think you are wrong about this as I seem to remember the early shows being somewhat a local sucess and only got better every year. That was before the red arrows. I assume not every airshow has the red arrows in attendance and are very successful so I would assume your comment is wrong.

Robert, I noticed that on the Evening News too. Also noticed that the Duke of Hamilton had made a commet about the Reds using Leuchars and so could some of the bigger aircraft and also that the smaller aircraft could use Archerfield.

Makes you think the Duke should put on a smaller display from Archerfield himself if it viable. I dont know the possibility of this as I have never seen the Archerfield area before.

The Evening News (that well known accurate Newspaper) says that the East Fortune Air Display is still off. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are Notams issued restricting any flying during the G8 period in any case. The Museum never issued any information about the contents of the 2005 Show so perhaps not much was booked in any case.
