East Kirkby pt 2

Went to East Kirkby tonight, and I have to say,I thought the taxi ride was a tad disappointing. 🙁

When I went last,in 2003,the Lanc started at the enclosure, went out to the runway, turned round, and then came back.

Tonight,it was towed out to the runway, the engines started, and it then came into the enclosure under it’s own power, where the engines were wound up twice, and that was it.

Why the change of plan?

The past few times that I’ve been to East Kirkby the pilot has been either Rick Groombridge or Jacko Jackson. Does Mike Chatterton still do taxi runs?

Rob

yes, well he was last season… although something at the back of my mind thinks he’s changing the day job so maybe not now.. dunno could be talking complete rollocks.. 😀

Has anyone actually contacted EK, to ask about the difference in what some people seem to get from a taxi, for the same money?

I’d like to see Mike Chatterton posted back to BBMF- he used to fly PA474 beautifully!

Spooky boss, Robbo, and Hatton. My sister in law told me that ex bomber (Lancs)pilot John Chatterton was the pilot and I can well believe otherwise she,my brother and their kids would never have gotten a ride, I believe it costs a quid or two. I also know Jacko was the city of Lincoln pilot for many years, should we ask the Panton Bros. Now to this pull through stunt, you only need to turn an engine over if it is a radial or an upside down motor, It is done to make sure oil has not drained into the bottom cylinders which could cause a hydraulic lock and do a heap of damage when starting and there is no earthly reason to even touch the prop on a merlin. The Mid upper ? well I must confess I never knew Just Jane was not completly authentic, Having flown many times in Lancs (from East Kirkby by the way) I can see from your photographs that the interior is not original though I doubt if a fairing would obstruct the view much, Any way your comments are appreciated, thats what this site is all about. Now can any of you give me any info on the Jordan trainer.

sorry grounded if it sounded like I was questioning your sisters word, its just a surprise to me. Did she actually say John Chatterton was the pilot or did she say he got her the ride? If she said the former than it interesting to note that two generations of the same family were piloting the lanc at the same period of time.

best regards, steve

As far as the props go if they follow the same practice we do on our AC-47 then it’s point one blade down after landing. before the next flight the crew goes out and pulls the props thru and leaves one blade up which lets everyone know that the props have been pulled thru and the engines are ready to start.

Great shots Rob,

Looks like there was a good turnout at EK despite the cold.

My brother and his family got a ride in Just Jane before Xmas because they worked for the pilot who was a lawyer in Horncastle. The pilot a mr Chatterton has since passed away, he was an ex bomber pilot with much experience with Lancasters so I would think the organisers are not about to risk their valuable aeroplane at the hands of a novice.

erm…im confused. I dont think the elder Chatterton (John) was a taxi pilot of Just Jane, was he? I may be wrong but ive never heard of him doing runs. It is his son and ex BBMF lanc pilot, MIKE Chatterton who is involved and is more than able to perform the runs (he was the pilot on my taxi run day). Jacko Jackson is also ex Battle of Britain flight.

best regards, steve

East Kirkby Lanc mid upper

Great photos of the Lanc, congratulations you guys. In my last comment I surmised the organisers were using a new pilot, I had no idea it was Jacko’ he is certainly no novice. Now can someone tell me why there is no fairing for the mid upper, also why when the engines are stopped the props are so neatly positioned? Its just not natural except perhaps on the AOCs parade, I wonder how many of you fellows have been on one of those? 😀

Absolutely superb. The funny thing is Rob,I may have actually walked behind you, when you were taking the static shots of the Lanc from the rear.

Ken.

you should’ve kicked his tripod, he’d have noticed you then!!!! 😉 😀

i think it was something to do with the fact that there was a little bit of explosives being in the area were it normaly turns round. 😉

correct..!!

they did the same at the end of last year, but that because it was so cold the windscreen was icing up and the pan was a bit slippery so didnt want to chance putting a wheel on the soft stuff..

erm, and I don’t think you could class ‘Jacko Jackson as a novice Lanc driver!! 😀
