I havent watched US tv in about a year, so I dont know if this show is still going strong. But this is (or was?) the most popular show in the England. Why? This has to be the most miserable, hatefull collection of human beings Ive ever seen. British people in chatrooms have told me its popular because it depicts real life. I hope real life isnt really like that in England.

Aha! another Danger Mouse fan , I used to put that on for my kids but they didnt have a bl**dy clue what the plot was about ,mind you they were only under school age …………….yeah yeah ok ! I used to put it on for my own entertainment!!

A Challenge – Can you name some strong relationships in any UK soap? e.g. Ones where a couple have been married for years and not had a bumpy ride.
Let’s face it, that’s why we watch these things, the action cannot be resisted by anyone – myself included. Could you imagine watching a soap which really is supposed to represent everyday life in England? Not quite as eventful as these programmes make out – the wife would go to shops and buy some groceries, go home and make tea. The show would end with us guessing what she was cooking, whereas the over-exaggerating soaps end with who shot Phil or something equally interesting and exciting!

Anyone remember ‘Cracker’? By far the best police/crime/forensics TV-series ever. The whole series was so incredibly dark and gloomy, full of disgusting side-dishes of humanity, some episodes really depressed me for a number of days. Absolutely brilliant.
Robbie Coltrane was an extremely credible, cynical, hopeless forensic psychologist. I believe there was another series with another actor as psychologist, but i’ve never bothered to watch those. It would take away the shivers too much, i guess.
As for British comedy, i always preferred the more absurd and right-in-your-face ones. ‘The Young Ones’, ‘Bottom’, ‘Filthy, Rich and Catflap’, ‘Red Dwarf’, ‘Monty Python’, ‘Blackadder’, the lot. What i find rather amazing is that even the extremely corny comedies usually are bearable and actually fun to watch. Although i can’t stand ‘Are you being served’, i did enjoy stupid stuff like ‘On the Buses’, ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Some mothers do ‘ave ’em’, ‘Keeping up appearances’…
As for British SF series, Dr. Who was definately the best, with Blake’s 7 coming up second. Never liked Space 1999 or that one which used to be running on the BBC a while ago.

ELP – Fawlty Towers was one hell of a funny series, I prefer “Only Fools And Horses” myself, classic comedy, although they should never have brought it back at Christmas!!

Of the British shows I watch… “So Graham Norton” is currently my favourite. Other favs include (in no particular order) Blackadder, The Professionals, Open all hours, Danger mouse :-), Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf, Dr-Who, Blakes 7, The Saint, Babes in the wood, Yes Minister, and Yes, Prime Minister, The Kenny Everett show, The two Ronnies, The Young Ones, Bottom, The New Statesman, Last of the Summer Wine, and quite a few others whose names escape me.
(And anything with billy connely or any of the Monty Python nutters)
Hehehehe fav bit in Fawlty Towers was when Basil hits his head or something and after cautioning everyone not to upset the German guests ends up in a huge argument with them that he starts, which ends something like.
“…no you started it, no you started it, no you started it… you invaded Poland!”

I never liked the show. I like a few of the British comedies better. Although I do like Wendy whatshername when she was in “Are You Being Servered?” A ridiculous silly show but funny. Of course the best British comedy of all time was Faulty Towers. “Manual !!!!!! ” “Se?” …….

Eastenders plays a pivotal role, along with Emmerdale and Coronation Street, in British Society. As you say Eastenders is probably the most miserable soap opera on tv, one can imagine if you are depressed it would drive you either to suicide or make you feel better knowing someone else’s plight is far worse than your own. The plot lines in these programmes are often so implausible as to beggar belief. Coronation Street and Emmerdale are generally far ‘lighter’ in their story lines but still pile on the agony.
Take Coronation Street, it is supposed to depict everyday life in a northern town. In the last two years there has been a rape, four murders (and the murderer is still free), a fatal shooting, several car crashes, at least one mugging, a 14 year old girl becoming pregnant, an abortion (unrelated), drug smuggling and numerous extra-marital affairs. I don’t know about you but if I lived in that street I’d move.
There is no escape. I don’t watch these programmes at all but the stories are depicted in the newspapers as though they are real.
