Great photos guys.
Unfortunately I chose to be with the public massed at Mayflower Park, Southampton, where the Sun disappeared at the appropriate time.

Hi Mark,

I originally tried one of Southampton councils recommended viewing areas for the flypast down at Itchen Valley Country Park, but quickly realised I’d be better off at the airport, despite having to pay a ridiculous sum for parking.

I know what you mean about the sun, just typical.

Alphachi1989, Glad you liked the photos, it was just a shame that the area where the spits were parked was surrounded with wire mesh fencing.

Looks nice and moody, though, Mark.

Gary – love the line-up shot. I take it you were having to shoot through the wire mesh for that one?

A final selection of birthday photos, the line up shot was taken through wire mesh hence the unusual lighting.

Cliffair; Eastleigh does not exactly lend itself to photography, the short term multi storey car park is quite good for ramp shots although you will have to stick your lens between the wire mesh, the mound is OK although still quite a distance off the runway 300-400mm lens essential.

I did a recce of the area yesterday trying to find a good position on the approach and the only place worth considering was in a some crematorium/ graveyard, local spotters may no of better places though.

The BBMF were due to bring one of their Spits along does anyone know why they dropped out.

Cliff,

the ‘mound’ is just past the hangars at SOU on the left side (opposite fuel farm) on the way to the long term car park. No parking anywhere near but it is only a 10 min walk from the airport station car park.

hope this helps

Paul pardon my ignorance but where is the mound?? I ask as I will be moving to the Eastleigh area this year and so Southampton will be my new photo haunt.

I just saw a report from Eastleigh on the five-ship formation on the news. It was wonderful to see Alex Henshaw climbing into the two-seater, to take part in the flight. At 93 he was saying this was his last Spitfire flight. Also interviewed was Dr Gordon Mitchell, Reginald’s son. What a great event, thanks for the photos Gary.

Very nice, Gary. Particularly like the shot of TA805 against that pale blue/white sky 🙂
