“Easyjet and Ryanair are today reported to be entering talks aimed at a merger of the two succesful low cost airlines, in the face of rising fuel costs and increased competition from the full fare sector of the business.
Easyjet executives believe the only way forward for the two businesses is for them to become one and “forge a strong alliance against increasing demands for a lower cost product against a rising cost product”.
The two airlines which between them operate a mixed fleet of the successful Boeing 737 and Airbus A319 aircraft have agreed in principle to merge next year, retaining parts of each companies name. Suggestions for the name of the rebranded airline include EasyRyan and RyanJet.
“The proposal will go before the monopolies and mergers commission towards late 2005 it is hoped” said Ryanair spokeswoman Brenda Doolally.”
