easyjet announce BIG Gatwick expansion

New routes to Budapest, Murcia, Cologne, Rome, and Venice – and more routes from Gatwick than any other London airport!

easyJet has today outlined the next stage in its ongoing expansion plans at London’s Gatwick Airport, resulting in at least an additional eight services each day.

Over the course of the next few months, easyJet will add frequencies to a number of existing routes and start new services to wholly-new destinations.

In September, easyJet will:
Start services to Budapest and Cologne
Increase frequency to Madrid to two flights per day

In November, easyJet will:
Start services to Rome and Venice
Increase frequency to Cologne to two flights per day

In February, easyJet will:
Start services to Murcia
Increase frequency to Geneva to five flights per day

Seats will go on sale here at easyJet.com in the coming days – stand-by for something special when they do! Make sure you’ve registered to receive our email alerts to be among the first to find out the details.

easyJet is also in the planning stage to put more services into Gatwick, the results of which will be announced very shortly.

Ray Webster, easyJet Chief Executive, said:

“I am very excited to be announcing new routes and increased frequencies from Gatwick as it marks the next step in our continued, planned expansion from the airport. Taking into account the services we announced today, easyJet will have grown some 40% year on year at London Gatwick.

“Once the new services commence to Budapest, Murcia, Cologne, Rome and Venice, we will fly to more destinations from Gatwick than from any other base on the easyJet network – including Stansted and Luton.

“The fact that we can start five new routes and add only a single new point to the network underlines why we put so much emphasis on network density and the joining-the-dots element of our growth strategy.”

Will give all those shiny new A319s plenty to do. 🙂

You haven’t seen hell until you’ve been to Zante airport in greece when 3 752s are departing at around the same time! 😮
Don’t let the airport put you off!! The island itself is beautiful, my fav out of all the Greek Islands I’ve visited so far; Corfu, Zante, Crete.

Tell me about it! In Corfu last year, had to wait an hour and a half when there were two Britannia 767-300s, our Britannia 757 and a Futura 737. But thats Greece for you!

Corfu more than makes up for it. 🙂

I doubt you will ever see EasyJet in Lisbon,Vienna or Dublin because they are very dear airports to operate into.I saw a programme once and somebody from easyJet said Faro is much more cheaper.

They were only on my wishlist. I didn’t really expect EZY to announce them. I’d much prefer if Monarch were to do LIS, PRG and MJV rather than easyJet.

Yeah I know that, what I meant was that when more than 1 flight is in at Corfu (and they are alot of charter flights in most days!) There is no where to sit down and that sounds like when MJV gets more than a couple of flights in, but they are actually doing something about it, where as Corfu never changes! I’ve never waited less than an hour for my cases in Corfu.

Murcia is a lot smaller than Corfu, and it is a Spanish air force base.

If Dublin is that expensive, why do the most cost concious airline base there?

Murcia sounds like Corfu, except the Spanish actually do something about their airports getting busier!

Murcia from London Gatwick is great news!!!! My family own an apartment in Torrevieja and we now always use Murcia over Alicante due to it being slightly nearer and easier to use. A new toll road was built about a year ago near MJV but the Spanish refuse to pay it so the road is always empty so this road is always free from traffic – if not dead sometimes!

However Murcia is now becoming congested and building work is actually being carried out to extend the arrivals area. When I last used Murcia in Easter, in a space of about 1 hour and a half there were 5 flights arriving and departing – 1 FlyBe to SOU, 1 GBAirways to LGW, 1 Ryanair to BHX, 1 Ryanair to STN and 1 MYT Lite to BHX. There are only 6 check in desks so the check in area was chaos and the departure lounge did not have enough seats for the amount of passengers and more people were standing around compared to people sitting down. It was also very hot and became frustrating.

Im glad easyJet have announced the new MJV route but I just hope that more building work is carried out at Murcia to cope with the expansion!!

Obviously they must have their reasons for starting more routes from LGW over LTN. LTN used to be it’s biggest base did it not?

Maybe its because Gatwick is closer to London than Luton and they feel more people want to fly closer to London?

I think they do very well from Gatwick as it is a very congested airport compared to the likes of LTN and have very few major delays as fair as I can see.

I think STN is, but now with this announcement LGW will become so.

Ah right, I just checked the site and saw they didn’t serve it regualrly that was all. I understand if it’s just the odd Ad-Hoc charter.

I’ve just double checked that – and we don’t serve it regularly – only on ad-hoc charters these days. However, I’d like to see it come true – LTN/MJV!! Another route that will be snapped up one day soon by someone.

Torrevieja is quite nice and I stay near there every time I go to Spain. I have flown into MJV once (Baby), although we almost booked last October’s flight with AEU to Murcia. Where I stay, I see everything going into Murcia including Jet2, My Travel, about 4 or 5 Ryanair, Bmibaby, British Airways, Monarch and Air Nostrum.
