easyJet, Europe’s leading low-cost airline, today announced significant growth from its base at London Luton Airport. The airline will be adding three more aircraft to the existing 13, representing a growth of 25% by the end of the winter.
In addition to Dortmund, Krakow and Warsaw announced last week, easyJet will be launching at least three more new routes to its ever growing network. Details of the new destinations will be released within the next few weeks, and will reflect the airline’s ongoing strategy to link the most attractive and popular destination airports.
easyJet currently offers a choice of 22 routes from London Luton to a variety of attractive destinations throughout Europe. Over five million passengers have flown from the Luton base in the last 12 months, and the airline intends to increase this figure to over six million within the next year.
Ray Webster easyJet Chief Executive commented:
“Luton was easyJet’s first base and has always proved to be a successful and profitable market. Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to London, and the Herts, Beds and Bucks regions. We intend to continue with our planned growth and envisage further successful development from Luton”.
So wheres the betting on new routes? Surely the likes of Prague and Rome?
Great news for Luton.

Maybe Easy to Dublin.3 of 13 is not a 25% increase and Ryanair are Europes leading low cost airline 😀
Actually, statistics show easyjet are. And if we’re measuring by customer satisfaction, EZY wipes the floor with FR
Or so I heard on the bbc this morning

FR has such a monopoly on the DUB route, would EZY be able to make a profit. Other regional routes could include: NCL, LPL or MAN
I agree about LED, but places like Thessaloniki, Hereklion and the Canaries have huge tourist potential. With IT operators dictating charter flights, the independant traveller will be glad to hear of such a service and for all the expats in Greece and the Canaries which are not well served. I would not think that such routes would be daaily, possiblely 2 or 3 times weekly operating sometimes at night to utilise aircraft. These people dont mind travelling at night, which would not be buisiness routes.

I remember EasyJet saying that Lisbon was far too dear for a LCC Croatia definitley a possibiltlity if not now in the near future but I think LED is out the window.

i wuld love to see Tenerife added as Monarch Scheduled is charging over £250, which I hink is too expensive

I think the most likely *NEW* routes could be:
Copenhagen
Lisbon
Ibiza
Bucharest
Oslo
Prague
St Petersberg?
Croatia – Up and coming tourist destination
Varna – Same as above
*Gran Canaria / Lanzarote – untapped market?

I am wondering if Ryanair’s announcement is in response to the latest row they are having with BAA about the charges at Stansted.
Ryanair seem to have a grievance with paying their dues wherever they go ? They’ve only just opened up their new maintenance base at PIK and are already embroiled in a dispute with Ayrshire Council about having their rates bill reduced.
They seem to think they should pay less than everyone else in all cases ?
As for the latest Luton expansion… good news for competition bad news for spotters I think ? Must be dullsville having all those Ryanair/Easyjet planes buzzing in and out all day ?

Ryanair has today announced they are to launch nine new routes from Luton and to base four 737-800’s at the airport in addition to the 737-200 based at there flying to Dublin and the 737-800 flying to Milan Bergamo.
The new destinations are:
BARCELONA (GIRONA)
ESBJERG
ROME
BARCELONA (REUS)
MURCIA
STOCKHOLM (VASTERAS)
DINARD
NIMES
VENICE
Cannot find details on the frequencies on Ryanairs website.
Yesterday easyJet announced they would be basing three new aircrafts at the airport and this comes in addition to be low routes which have been lauched in the last two weeks.
The last few weeks must have seen the largest growth in the airports history!
I am wondering if Ryanair’s announcement is in response to the latest row they are having with BAA about the charges at Stansted.
There have been rumours for years Ryanair would annouce a major base at Luton and that day has finally come.
This comes in addition to other services that have been announced at Luton in recent weeks:
easyJet
2x Daily Service – Dortmund
2x Daily Service – Warsaw
1x Daily Service – Krakow
Increase to 2x Daily Service – Budapest
Wizz Air
2x Daily Service – Warsaw
1x Daily Service – Gdansk
Increase to 2x Daily Service – Katowice (Krakow)
Increase to 3x Daily Service – Budapest
Britannia (TUI)
1x Weekly Service – Sharm El Sheikh
Thomas Cook Airlines
Annouced a second aircraft will be based at LTN during July, August and September. With two 757’s being based at the airport throughout the Summer Season 05.

yes, that was from some place callled….. Glasgow? was it?
We’re talking luton here 😉
Why on earth would I want to fly from Luton ? (lol) 😀
But to address the point, maximum rotations is perhaps written on the walls of every loco’s head office. So I can see why Ryanair and Easyjet might not be interested? Besides they would be directly stepping on the toes of the charter line’s bread and butter work, something they wouldn’t take lightly.
Globespan however come from the unique perspective of serving the Scottish market. We don’t like paying those ridiculous surcharges to the usual charter operators for the privilige of flying from our local airports.

Didn’t Go used to fly to TFS in the summer months?
By: LBARULES - 22nd July 2004 at 09:33
Didn’t anyone read my Fly Globespan trip report in February ? 😉
I certianly did read the report (Very good it was too!). What I mean is you don’t see the big locos such as Ryanair,Easyjet,BMI Baby,Jet2 flying to the Canaries, which you would think would be very popular. The only reason I can think why they dont do it is because it would utilise the a/c for 8/9 hours, whereas they could probably make more money by doing a few short haul rotations in that time.

Ah-hem, Monarch Scheduled (a LCC  ) fly to Tenerife from Luton (4x weekly) and Manchester (7x weekly). Luton has been on the go for about 15 years 😮 and Manchester started last winter 😉 .
Tell all of your friends! 😉 🙂 😀

Pprune is usualy more reliable than a.net at least.
Lots of crew there that start up rumblings.
A lo-co to the canaries would steal so much of the limelight they’ed wnder why they didn’ try it before
By: LBARULES - 21st July 2004 at 18:41
They already fly to Athens from Luton. I’m surprised some lo-cos dont start the Canaries, they surely would be very popular, rumblings lately that Jet2 want to but that was on Pprune and when were they ever right!
By: Bmused55 - 21st July 2004 at 18:39
great news indeed
wouldn’t be surprised if they start greek routes, or perhaps a route to tenerife. A potential gold mine for an LCC
