easyJet Announce New Base…

…and it’s MAD/Madrid. No suprises there then :p

easyJet, Europe’s leading low-fares airline, today announced a significant expansion of its services in Spain and the launch of a new base at Madrid’s Barajas airport. Madrid will be the airline’s 17th base and the first in Spain.

The Madrid base will commence operations on 16 February 2007 with several brand new routes from Spain’s largest airport. The details of the new routes and the size of the operation will be announced in September.

Roll on September then!

I dont know it U2 would do very well on domestic routes from MAD. After fling with IB today and last week and seeing just how many passengers are transferring from international flights to domestic flights and the other way round is mind boggling.

Interesting angle. To take the fire out of an EZY GLA-MAD service? Or do you think the two could run unhindered by each other?

Eitherway, a direct MAD service from EDI would be nice. Not sure what the loads would be like… but it’d be nice all the same.

OR is there already a MAD service?

Iberia had slots for an daily MAD-EDI service starting this summer using A319, but disappointly it never happened for whatever reason, but that’s a lot closer than EZY have come to starting the route so far anyway. With the amount of Spanish toursits alone travelling between the 2 cities on charters in the summer the demand is clearly there.

FlyGlobespan tried EDI-MAD and bookings were poor so the route never got of the ground.

Their is far more chance of EZY starting Glasgow to Madrid than there is of EDI, going by the recent expansion of Easyjet into Europe from Glasgow and that Easyjet have already said they are interested in a Glasgow – Madrid route.

Hmm, suddenly the prospect of an EDI-MAD scheduled service becomes tantilisingly real.

More chance of Iberia than EZY IMO.

I hope Glasgow to Madrid goes on sale soon. Easyjet have already said they are looking at operating Glasgow to Madrid.

Good decision if routes are international. MAD don´t have as much as low costs as Barcelona, but bad idea if they pretend to get into the domestic market. Some tough competitors…Vueling, Iberia with ClickAir, Air Europa and Spanair are dropping fares, and Ryanair is planning also to get in.

Domestic fares are really cheap now, ground transport is getting better, and high speed is getting to more destinations day by day. There are too many competitors and I wouldn´t recommend Easyjet to fly inside Spain. The times of monopolistic Iberia has gone away.
