Easyjet new route

Easyjet have announced that from 7th January 2003 they will launch a new daily service between Liverpool and Alicante, twice daily on Sundays. They also announced from 18 December LPL-GVA will go to 3 per day and LPL-BFS to eight per day. The BFS route is amazing how well it has done, when I think back to the days when it was Manx/BA to BHD with only 3 props per day, Manx used to use Shorts 360s and BA J41s. its a shame they do not operate any longer alongside Easyjet to Belfast City to give a choice of airports in Belfast, however thanks to Easyjet LPL now carries the most passengers to Belfast from the Northwest of England.

RE: Easyjet new route

It was great to have Emerald, they really did cause prices to fall.

Unfortunately the “manx mafia” of vested interests was upset by the damage caused to Manx Airlines’ results and Emerald felt that it had no choice but to concentrate on a freight contract which was offered to it.

I would certainly say that the use of little turboprops is worrying, as airlines subsequently find it difficult to offer cheap prices due to each single seat being significant in a revenue context. The future for small island communities has got to be P2P links with major centres, such as IOM-AMS and IOM-CDG. Unfortunately (and JER and GCI are in the same positon) there is a simple choice between a lowco carrier using 737’s for a handful (2 or 3) of routes, or BA or Flybe offering lots of routes with good timings.

A possible solution is for a joint venture airline to be developed between someone like BA or BMI and the local governments, where a subsidy is offered on every seats. IOM, JER and GCI can certainly all afford to do this.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-11-02 AT 05:11 PM (GMT)]In your opinion would you say it was better for IOM residents, when you had Emerald operating against Manx/BA on IOM-LPL. I seem to recall they had some quite reasonable fares available at the time. Its bad when people who live on an Island or somewhere remote with little choices available to them get penalised and charged inflated fares. Im thinking of place like Inverness as well, before Easyjet offered a London link.

Liverpool-Belfast 8 times a day! That short flight is hell for the flight crew in a jet as there is so much to do in so little time.

RE: Easyjet new route

That’s BA for you. They sell seats for £200 on a J41 or ATP and wonder why someone else selling seats at £50 on a 737 makes more money than they do.

Unfortunately for us here in the Isle of Man, we only really have BA and Flybe. EuroManx are a little BA, charging £250 for 45 minutes on a Beechcraft 1900D.

RE: Easyjet new route

I think Northern Irish routes can be agreed as some of the most profitable in the UK. I can’t wait for a BFS->LGW cos flybe is currently £56.00 return but with easyjet i would suspect £25-30 on average!

Rdgs,

Andrew
