I was looking through ebay and comparing two products,a Nikon D80 body only & a sigma 50-500mm DG APO,with my local camera shop & an irish camera website,I go the following quotes
Ebay:
D80 body only €700
Sigma 50-500 DG APO €759
Total= €1,459
Local shop
D80 body only €999
Sigma 50-500 DG APO €1149
Total= €2148
Irish website
D80 body only €939
Sigma 50-500 DG APO €1174
Total= €2113
I must say the results i’ve found are a little but surprising,the results i used from ebay were from sellers that had greater than 98.4% customer satisfaction,and there were many many replies dating all the way up to this morning.
My only real question is how can ebay be alot cheaper than the others.?
I must say i’m very tempted to purchase from ebay,what should i do….?

If you buy new cheap from overseas you will often find no product support in the Uk regarding warranty you have to send it back to the overseas dealer. So if you can manage without your camera thats ok then.
the gamble is that the gear works ok for long enough to make the cheaper price worth it.

Also check that they are not Factory Re-conditioned, these are cameras that have been faulty, returned and fixed, but can’t be re=sold as new. eBay is awash with these, some are OK, some are not!
I have bought 2 irons, they were awful, but I have bought 2 Factory Reconditioned Dell Computers and they are great (and were half price)
I bought my Panasonic FZ5 second hand from eBay, and it is like new, secondhand Cameras and Hi-Fi seem to be what eBay was made for!

The seller may offer to mark the item as a “gift”, to try and bypast customs, this is illegall but nothing to worry about.
Also some sellers offer to pay back the import duty back if you’re charged.
You may want to try THIS store. Been reccomended to me a few times and they have excellent reviews. Based in Hong Kong and they will refund any import duty you get charged.

Are some of those products from hong kong, or internationally?
Bare in mind important tax, which would drastically increase the price if you were hit by it. Also, if the camera itself is from an international retailer, then the manuals will be in an international language and there will be some concerns on the warranty.
