Still over priced, if you want to pay this sort of money, they’ll keep putting the price up.
I’ve been opperating Merlins for 2 decades and they were overpriced then and they’re overpriced now.mick

Correct, nobody wanted it at 17K.:(

If this trend is continueing then it will only be a matter of time before new crankcases and engine blocks etc. will be made. Some small parts are already being made. Who knows, the Merlin may even be put back into production.

When more vintage aircraft are being restored, the need for more engines increases as well (including spares)

I think an engine as you describe for £10k is a good deal, £17k is a bit steep, but gone are the days when you can pickup a serviceable merlin for under £5k, and as they continue to be worn out and in some cases destroyed, they are just going to get more expensive; there are more warbirds around now in private hands, and no one is making engines for them.

Correct, but the last one I got about 18 months ago, ish. Was complete with all pumps, carb, log cards and inhibited and that was £10,000, admittedly, it still wanted an overhaul, but there you go, and it hadn’t been used in a wind tunnell at Boscombe Down.

Perhaps they aren’t over priced at all, may be its just your perspective; after all ,you wouldn’t want to have to make one from scratch would you?

Yes I agree that this is the same Merlin 500 but it is not the Merlin II which was also on ebay at the same time which I thought as you’d said it was a Merlin II that was the engine you were refering to…

That was a different engine to this one…..

No I think that you will find that this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rolls-Royce-Merlin-Engine_W0QQitemZ190096408003QQcategoryZ2983QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rolls-Royce-Merlin-Engine_W0QQitemZ190093897243QQcategoryZ2983QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem are exactly the same engine.

Distinct lack of rocker covers too…… certainly not worth the asking price.

Its being sold by someone who does actually rebuild them for a living.

Sadly (because its out of my league!), the price isnt a million miles away these days. Good cores are becoming increasingly rare.

Already covered on another thread lads: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=68660&highlight=ebay – I recall that the Merlin cognoscenti were actually very excited by it as it was an early Merlin II.

Hi
Just see this on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rolls-Royce-Merlin-Engine_W0QQitemZ190096408003QQcategoryZ2983QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Yep, all you need is a carb, a set of magnetos, plugs, harnesses, fuel pump, oil pump, coolant pump, a set of crms and then you can spend about £150,000 to get it restored to put in ya spitfire,
It’s gross over pricing, just because its a merlin dont mean its worth a kings ransom.

A bllody expensive ornament.
