EC blocks Aegean-Olympic merger!

http://www.airlinesanddestinations.com/airlines/european-commission-prohibits-merger-between-aegean-and-olympic-air/

No info given by the EC on exactly why the merger was blocked, but both airlines have now acted upon the decision and the merger has been called off.

How/Why does it take so long for these things to be decided; the agreement to merge was made almost a year ago…?

Yes they do, they have about 12 Q400s, 2 Dash 8 100s, and 16 Airbus 320s. That’s what it was when I was out there.

OK ,Cheers though they had gone and transferred all the aircraft to Aegean or sold them on.

It was announced when I was flying for Olympic, the delay initially was Olympic and Aegean fighting out the percentage stakes and terms etc. It was then decided that Aegean was going to own 70% I think. Then it went to the European court. The other sticking point in the court was competition, basically with the 2 merging this wiped out any form of fair competition and the new company would have I think, again about 96% of the Greek and Aegean airline market. It was something inordinately large anyway. Then it was coming through that the courts may not give the go ahead.

It certainly comes as no surprise, and may even lead to us doing more work for Olympic. WHo knows.
