dark light

EDI tonight, including a special visitor.

There was a reason for going out when the light had gone! 🙁 😉
Blue Peter was in, but those pics were blurred as it departed, so forget them. I’ll post the few respectible ones. One of these days I’ll get out to EDI on a sunny day so I can make use of the cameras full potential! Although I am happy with how the head-on of G-EZJH came out. But as you can see, I was really on the wrong side of the airport, for what light there was.

Poor light. 😉

Flown this one twice last year.

What I went out for, nearly cut all the nose off! Taking the French rugby fans back to Orly.

Ok, so a B747 ripped up the runway again!

Hence, go arounds…

I’m happy with how this one came out.

There’s a break in the wet weather forecast for Thursday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/images/symbols/fiveday_sym/1.gif

So hopefully I’ll be able to get some pics in decent weather/light. 😀

Here are a few more from EDI on Sunday and as RIPConcorde says at the top of the thread “Blue Peter” arrived in the evening, here it is as seen from the 06 end after it landed and was vacating the Runway.

Never thought I would get the chance to shoot Titan’s special “Royal Mail” 737, I thought it only moved after dark. This was at the good time of about 6-30pm but you wouldn’t think so looking at the light level which was bad for a lot of the day.

Thanks.

Well done Stuart, can you remember if you used any different settings on that last EZY shot?

I know shots in bad weather are very difficult, and certainly don’t give you chance to show off full potential. Get down there on Thursday, I’ll be practising at STN too!

That particular pic was taken in auto mode. 😉 I discovered over the time I’ve had the camera and taking pics, not just aviation related, but in general, that the auto mode is particularly good! 🙂 So, although I have been mucking about with settings, not in that particular pic, I let the camera do the work…

As expected the forecast has changed significantly, but it’s safe to say that I will definitely be out when the sun appears, whatever day it chooses to be. Wednesday is currently showing as the best day.

The head on of the EZY is an excellent shot.

Indeed the one and only time I flew from EDI (runway 24) sat night departure to Las Palmas with Monarch (A320), we flew out over Glasgow (!!) and then turned south, down over Dublin and down towards the Canaries.

Indeed, that same prodedure is used for 06 departures at EDI, it’s just unusual for a runway 24 departure.

24 departures are usualy a straight line for several miles down the extended runways center line, then a turn to the south. Well they’ve used that everytime I watch a 24 dep.

So I can see how a turn to the north is unusual… never seen it with anythign other than Concordes last departure from EDI

RIPcioncorde, for example at MAN. I flew last year from MAN-TFS on TCX 753, we used 6L for departure then headed North and then west, getting a good view of MAN and a 742 lifting off 😉
I suppose it depends on the SIDs and STARs being used on that day

RIPConcorde, perhaps it went north to avoid GLA departures if they were using runway 5 there. Therefore it may have headed north then east, then went down the East Coast to Paris.

But what are the odds of the prevailing wind blowing in opposite directions at EDI and GLA? Ultimately, that’s probably the routing it took, but I’m not sure why, although I’ve seen it done before. Concorde on it’s last day for example.

It always amazes me how small runways look head on!

My BAA friend said no damage was done to the runway. The 747 just kicked up a lot of crap that could have cause damage to reversing engines on landing aircraft. Something freds photo illustrates.

Yeah, I jumped the gun abit really, as soon as I saw the assortment of vehicles coming on to the runway I presumed it might have gained some minor damage. It guess the thing in the pic is just a giant hoover sucking up the mess? 😉

Excellent pic, Fred. I knew it used up little runway, and as you can see from Fred’s pic it looks to be about exactly half. So a little over 4000ft, you can presume it was using a large amount of thrust then….
I also noticed the B742 took a very strange departure path, a right turn immediately after departure and then it flew North, yes North (it was going to Orly) until it was swallowed up by cloud… Normal departures for that runway are to follow runway heading for a good few miles before executing the turn to the general direction of the destination, normally left as most flights head South.

I went through today for the European 747 and was on the Footbridge for it departing but as RIPConcorde said the light stunk today particularly late on so I had to rack up the ISO to 400 for a better shutter speed to “stop” it.

Here’s a shot of the 747 rolling down Runway 24 and you can see the blast wave behind it, when I was looking through the Viewfinder at the time I could see it kicking up lots of dirt.

Anyone know what the actual damage was when it left? I remember a couple of years ago watching an Air Atlanta 747 at Glasgow taking out some Runway edge lights when it left from 05 this one must have been close to doing the same.

Fred.
