Edinburgh Airport Spitfire

Hi all,

My other half got back from Edinburgh lastnight and told me she saw a Spitfire parked outside the airport as a Gate Guard. Just wondered if anyone had the serial, a close up pic (or point me to one) and she thinks its called “Blue Peter”

TIA

I think what is being said is that RW393 was the original Spit Gate Guardian that was replaced with a GRP replica. RW393 has been out and about on dosplay but has since returned to the Midlands.

The GRP replica was moved when RAF Turnhouse closed and is now at the airport. The replica is not of RW393 but is a generic reproduction.

Merlin,

Thanks for that, I said I knew naff all about Spitfires, and the other halfs insistance dont help either.

Thanks all for ya help.

Er forget RW393, shes got clipped wings, and have found a pic on Google Earth (soz dont know how to share that) and the wings are eliptical like an early Mk of Spit. And before I offend the Spit Experts, Im sorry for the basic description and possibly wrong, what I know about Spits you could write on a postage stamp.

Unless I’m mistaken, the real one was RW393, which is/was on display at Cosford, but I believe now in storage with the RAF Museum?

Hi Bex,

It’s is a GRP 1:1 replica.

The real one used to be on gate guard duties over the other side of the road from the old terminal at RAF Turnhouse (outside the airmans mess).

Was removed and replaced as part of the GRP exchange deal (went to East Fortune IIRC).

The GRP replica made its way over to the new terminal when RAF Turnhouse was shutdown.

Regards
Ross
