Oops.
MOD website comments on the MkI spitfire in the arena. Erm that’s not like any Mk1 I’ve every seen.
Shame they couldn’t get the former British Legion replica or at least something more representative.
On a more positive note, the Swiss marching band was awesome.

If I remember right, the fuselage is the 90% part. The wingspan is something like 80%.
The Mk.26 was similar in that the wingspan was slightly smaller. There was also a 75% Mustang that had a 65% wing.

How does a wingspan of 27′-8″ equate to 90% scale?
Just curious how they do the calculation.

There is also a full-scale replica from Australia as well…

That mk26B really does look a nice aeroplane, and begs the question what would be better,(as a display) one of those or a fibreglass replica, admittedly neither are completely right for a BoB event, but ones an aeroplane and one isn’t.

There are two versions – the 80% Mk26:
And the 90% Mk.26B:

I would not say no if someone offered me a flight in one even if it wasnt a Spitfire!
Are they two seaters?

I must be honest if I say that 99.99% of the people at the Tattoo wouldn’t know the difference between any different types of aircraft. So the fact that it was a sort of scale replica in the wrong colours probably wouldnt matter to them.

Well said & she did add to the atmosphere there.(photo courtesy RAF)
Better this than no aircraft at all.

As nice as they are for the people that own and fly them, they are not Spitfires and are not representative of a MkI in any stretch if the imagination.

At the Royal Tournament at Earls Court in 1957 they had no less than three Mk XVI’s in the arena to recreate the siege of Malta. They fired up the engine on at least one and possibly them all. SL574, TE330 and TE474 were spotted and quickly snapped up by the CO of the embryonic Historic Aircraft Flight at Biggin Hill….all to fly again.

Perhaps we should issue the the RAF Regiment with DP rifles and tell to shout bang if confronted by the enemy. Real is real dummy is dummy and a Mk 26 is neither real nor dummy.

Miss Representation?
I didn’t know there was a Spitfire in there. I caught most of the Tattoo flypasts; a couple of Hercs, a couple of Typhoons and a C17 Globemaster. I missed the King Airs on the opening night. Normally the flypasts 100% Phoonery, and the other aircraft were apparently included because of the BoB Anniversary events. Quite why they didn’t get the BBMF involved, and used a couple of different transports to add a dash of colour, is beyond me.

Not sure about calling it “Miss Helen” – should be called “Miss Taken”….
(Is that another one to the left behind it?!!!!!) 😮

This one? based at perth.
Yes Robert. Doesn’t really fit with the description on the MOD website nor with what many watching the Tattoo on TV or in the arena would know as being representative as a BoB MkI Spitfire.
It seems anything goes. Perhaps those responsible should be paid with £5 notes to represent £20 notes and see if they are happy with a different representation of their pay? 🙂

There was real Spitfire at a previous Edinburgh Tattoo. It was a RW388 low backed aircraft modified as a Vb marked as AB917 in 1968.
Also at Earls Court in July of that year.
