Edinburgh Question…

A friend recently flew with Onur Air from Edinburgh to Dalaman due to return to Edinburgh on June 26th at 20.40.
Plane went tech after take off from Dalaman and landed at Instanbul for an hour.
By the time they got back in the air the pilot said that they could not land at Edinburgh because the main runway was out of action. Im not sure what Onur fly but could the second runway not cope with a 737 or an airbus or whatever it was ?
Landed at Glasgow 3am..no buses available to take passengers back to Edinburgh…

Was this a justifiable excuse or was there another reason why they couldnt land at Edinburgh?

The passenger will have made their contract with the tour operator, not the airline.

The tour operator is responsible for the actions of its contractors (e.g Onur Air)

Therefore the passenger needs to take up what happened with the tour operator. There should be some reference within the T&Cs of what the tour operator considers itself responsible for.

The only question to be asked, is whether Onur Air contacted the tour operator to advise them of the diversion as they would have been well aware of the eventual destination (presuming the flight deck crew had made themselves aware of what was a scheduled closure…)

As the aircraft would have been due to take a return load of passengers, how did they get from EDI to GLA?

Wasnt me Old Git..but yes my friend had to make her own way back….

Sorry! not paying attention – just like I was at school:D
I think that is pretty shocking. Surely the airline had entered into a contract with the passenger to take them to a particular destination and is legally bound to get them there?? Some years back my son was on his way back from army camp at Catterick and the train was stuck for hours on the way. It arrived in London around 2am. The tube had stopped running and he had missed the last train from Paddington to Newbury. They paid for a taxi to take him all the way home from Kings Cross. I would have thought an airline had a similar obligation. It would have been bad enough in the middle of the afternoon but 3am really is shocking. If she had not enough money for a taxi, she would have had to wait a few hours for public transport to start.

The secondary runway is 6,000ft long and could have easily coped with a 737 or MD83/88 size aircraft. Jersey has a shorter runway than that and regularly handles these types. The problem (as RIP Concorde has said) was probably that the runway would not have coped with a full load for the return journey but having said that, what was the reason the main runway was out of action I wonder?
It was also pretty shoddy to be dumped at 3am at Glasgow without transport being laid on. Did you have to make your own way back?

The main runway is getting re-surfaced and is closed Sunday night-Thursday night all summer.

Thanks RIP…..

Seating configuartion on that aircraft….3 and 2 my lady friend was trying to tell me..would that be right on a 321?

Ah if it was 3-2 then it would have been one of their MD83/88 aircraft.

Would probably have been an A321. While I’m sure it could have landed (assuming weather conditions were good enough), I doubt it would have been able to get out again with a full load back to DLM so that would no doubt have influenced the decision too.

For a smallish airline they seem to have a lot of “Incidents”
