Educate me!! – Anglophile…Frankophile…Yankophile?

If a non-English person who likes English culture is an Anglophile and, likewise, a non-French person liking French culture is a Francophile, then what is a non-US citizen called who likes American culture?

This is supposed to be a serious question, but I’ve decided to throw caution to the wind.

US culture

Interesting this.

I very much admire the capacity of the US to tolerate internal debate and dissension … to allow all sorts of liberal and alternative dialogs and ways of life … in general to be an open and enquiring place. Whenever I’ve been in the states (on business travels, some for few weeks, but Ive never lived there) I’ve found this intriguing and admirable. To some degree I find it schizophrenic! The classic being surfing the late night TV when I can’t sleep courtesy the time zone and being alternately bombarded with soft-porn and preachers. All very odd.

Of course the current admistration would have liked to change all this .. but hey, now the Democrats have the upper hand?

So I guess I’m a “phile” of sorts for the US way of open debate. For it’s intelligence and questing.

But not for the Top 40 and Maccas in your face consumerism. But that’s not culture.

So I would say, yes the US deserves a “phile” moniker.

BTW I’m saying US, not America. The Continent of America, North and South, is many many countries all with their own cultures.

One thing I find bemusing is where you go to another country and take the nationality of that country thus earning a double barrelled moniker. I’m Irish so if I went to Shanghai and applied for Chinese nationality that would make me Irish-Chinese. Or when I was in Jeddah and had I applied for Saudi nationality (something very difficult to get incidentally) I would have become Irish-Saudi Arabian.

It’s worrying that there is no need for a word to describe people who admire the American culture.

There are some….go into the Hot Rod Cafe outside of London.
There you’ll see all kinds of pale weedy looking chaps trying to channel James Dean.

When I was stationed there two young guys driving hotted-up Capris would take their jet-skis to the North Sea, then stop at the base and eat in the Burger King. Judging by the way they dressed, ate, and what they drove, I’d say they were weannabe American high school kids. 😀

Takes all kinds..even those who make smug references about other countries…:D

You could go on and on with this theme.

Have you ever heard of a Scotophile (someone who likes Scotland)?

You could always be a Belgophile (someone who loves Belgian stuff)! Yes, they do exist despite the belief put about that everyone thinks France is the most wonderful country in Europe. When I’ve been in France I’ve been bored out of my mind – no proper pubs, no proper chips, no Atomium, no proper beer, no Brugge etc.

And if you like young Belgians in particular you are paedophile :p. bad taste in jokes, I know. just some national humour.

Comet I see you are still obsessed with Belgium :D. However, there are also other nice countries on the continent besides the land of beer and sprouts. I am flattered with your comments, but luckily for the french there’s no atomium however they have an equally hideous eiffel tower.

A search on Ameriphile gave me this: http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/17569

Sooner or later the media will tell us the answer, I guess.

People who love the stuff you find in archives are filophiles.

They’re people who like flaky pastry
