Hi,
Can anyone point us in the right direction for wartime production summaries for English Electric at Preston (EEP), in particular we are interested in the Halifax’s produced there.
Any help much appreciated.

Redhillwings,
Good job, but a difficult one. Even if you do find that English Electric serialnumberplate. AFAIK all records linking factory information to the RAF serialnumbers were destroyed at some point in time. So you cannot crossreference to confirm a serial.
And it’s normal to find that the serialnumbers of the engines weren’t noted on the form 78.
So this will very likely be a process of elemination. Is the date of the crash known?
Other possible ways for identification can be:
remains of squadron codes/individual codes or serialnumber (all painted on the fuselage skin)
Codeletters painted on SBC’s endplates (general practice during wartime)
But this is a long and frustrating process, just keep trying and it will give results in the end.
If I can be of any help, please let me know. And keep us informed.
Cheers
Cees

Hi Cees,
Haven’t heard the London buses connection before but it made me laugh.
The thing is we are trying to ID a Halifax on behalf of a team in Germany, our only chance of confirming the Serial number of the aircraft once and for all is from the Merlin engine serials, I cannot really say anymore at this stage as we need to be sure about our facts. I know this sounds a bit cloak and dagger, but I can assure you it is all above board. Our only reason is that there may be families of the crew reading this and we really do not want to go public until the facts have been established for obvious reasons, also we need to pass our findings on to the MOD before anything else.
We have obtained the loss card for the Halifax that it is most likely to be but alas no engine numbers, we have also contacted Rolls Royce Heritage but so far no luck there either. Our last hope was to find something in the EEP records assuming they exist of course as there are a lot EEP stamps on the wreckage which at least may narrow it down a bit.
Does anyone know if the archives exist for EEP? I assume somewhere the engines serials would be recorded but I guess there is a strong possibility that they have disposed of after the war?

Yes, and EE had a very good record for fine workmanship as opposed to the LAPB built aircraft which were generally known as “London buses”.
EE can be proud of their contribution to the Halifax (and Hampden) production.

Hi, yes it seems they did the war effort proud with input of Hali bags.

Air-Britain Halifax File says that EEP produced 2145 Halis. Mk II, III, VI and VII
