£10m of funding is proposed for City of Derry Airport
The European Commission has approved plans for the expansion of the City of Derry Airport.
The British and Irish governments and the city council are proposing to spend £10m.
Airport manager Seamus Devine said they would not extend the runway, but would need to demolish some nearby houses.
“What we are planning to do is prepare grass overruns at the end of the existing runway – we’re not planning a runway extension,” he said.
He said that there would be an issue for residents in the Donnybrewar Road area, whose properties are in the middle of the 300 metre emergency overrun.
Mr Devine said that the money would also be used to purchase and remove those properties.
Up to 17 homes in the area may have to be demolished.
The money will fund cost overruns on previous runway projects, safety work and clearing obstacles at the western end of the runway.
In its ruling, the EC noted the current runway restricted the types of aircraft that can use the airport and the payloads that can be carried, “consequently hindering future development”.

That will go down like a lead balloon locally. Will a 300m grass overrun actually mean they arriving aircraft are not load limited like the RYR flights? Why not extend by 300m of concrete – just stupid IMO.

I smell something fishy here, why spend so much just to build an overrun. They might as well go the whole way and just build the extra tarmac. Aarrgghh 🙁

Isnt Ballykelly closing down?
Couldnt they just move there?

LOL @ murphy
Ballykelly has a much bigger runway – odd that no one has thought of obtaining permission from Planning Dept and Mod to buy it and turn into Commerical Venture as longer runway means larger loads can be brought in than Derry without pissing off locals whos houses have to be demolished!!
I mean seriously a grass over run – what do they expect twotters?

How much money is going to go towards a great big “THIS IS DERRY” sign for Ryanair/eireJet pilots 😀
