Egyptian National Military Museum (with thanks to Mr Tweed!)

folks,

With some helpful input from JDK (Mr Tweed) and one or two others on this board, I put together a “popular level” page on the Egyptian National Military Museum at the citadel in Cairo:

Comments, questions, corrections and criticisms all welcome!

Richard.

Seems they don’t care about the colours and markings, but the MiG and Sukhoi look fairly authentic. Not that can be said for the ‘Orange’ Wilga and ‘silver’ Zlin. Here they are in December 1989, probably when they were still in their original markings.

Those 1989 colours look a lot better than the current colours, as you say they probably don’t lose too much sleep over inauthentic schemes! And thanks for pointing out the broken JPEG, I’ve fixed that up.

I Liked the Mig pics Richard. I am not sure of the authenticity of the colour schemes and the bent tube is on a PF variant or?

Very good Richard, and I’m sure very useful for anyone visiting Egypt. The ‘catapult’ photo needs uploading again as all I get is a ‘x’.

Yes, I was impressed by the pedestals, too; they looked very professional.

Incidentally, I should have asked whether anyone can recognize what type of aircraft the Israeli wreckage came from – in my ignorance I was thinking perhaps an A-4?

Thanks for the look. I missed it when I was in Egypt a few years back.
Neatly designed pedestals for the jets…a bit more style than what we normally see.

Nice site – can I make one small suggestion? Drilling down into the site I see you have some links to other photos, one of which is labelled as a Vickers Vulcan…only I think you meant Avro Vulcan. There was a Vickers type called the Vulcan, but it’s quite a bit smaller than the type you’ve photographed….

Thanks for taking the time to point that out, I must have been thinking “Vickers Valiant” and had a senior moment, or something like that!

Anyway, I’ll try to remember to go in and fix that tonight.

The first two tanks in the “row of captured american tanks” appear to be russian – probably a PT76 and a T55 – maybe the reason theyouth were so eager to get photographed.

and i would REALLY like to KNOW HOW the pitot tube of the Fitter mounted so high was bent 😀

Lovely pictures – I esp like the MiG-21F-13 .. very rare in this part of the world
