EK and Zoom to EDI?

I was talking to a friend yesterday who works for BAA.
Apparently it would seem both EK and Zoom have been investigating slots and gate allocation combinations for EDI.

This doesn’t mean they’re definately coming plenty of airlines check this sort of information out and never operate from the airport they investigate but its certainly the strongest indicator so far.

Also, now that Zoom have a 3rd 767 it is not impossible. They may want to compete with Air Transat’s seasonal flights.
And EK, well if they want a monopoly for the Scotland-Dubai route… EDI is a natural second route.

Interesting times ahead.

On a side note, the same person had heard from his Glasgow conterpart that PIA have been sniffing around.

Ah well, we’ll see.
Does you man know if a similiar deal has been put on the table at GLA regarding a 2nd daily flight?

Just got word back from my BAA man.

EK have been offered a good deal on slots, parking and other service charges in EDI. They seemed rather happy. Still no firm decision. My friend says a lot of tentative deals get this far but no further.

With EK, cost has very little to do with it.
They come from a region where beer is more expensive than fuel. They have low overheads due to that.
Besides if they were to start from EDI, the cost would be negligable.

Incorrect from what I was told. The route planner with EK said that despite what people think EK try to operate in a simliar way to FR. They look for the cheapest option. Scotland wouldn’t have been given a thoguht until maybe 2008 but the money from the Scottish executive and BAA encouraged them to start up a lot earlier than planned.

Reports sugest they are now leaning towards the A350 (50 orders) over the 787, with the deciding factor being cost.

Hey, I would have said the same thing you said before I knew this.

Agreed , which according to last weeks press release is likely to lead to a 2nd GLA service as that would be more cost-effective than starting a new operation from another airport ,although an upgrade to the 773 later this year is all we can expect in the near future!

I think they are free to expand their Scotland services as they see fit.

After reading through this whole thread Ive completley forgotten what the topic was. Im sure many of you are the same.

Back to the topic. I think bmused said EK had also hinted at a summer 07 start and I think that is more likly due to the current EK aircraft backlog.

Does the UK have an open skies policy with UAE???
I dont think theres any other non-North American airline who could serve as many destination as EK does. How many destinations/frequency are they allowed operate on a daily basis?

Emirates intention is to make Dubai the largest hub in the world and they’re well on the way to doing that.

I’m not sure about an open skies policy though. I think they are free to expand their Scotland services as they see fit.
