heard this about an hour ago
Israeli security guards have foiled an alleged hijack attempt on an Israeli airlines flight bound for Istanbul.
El Al attacks
1968 flight from Rome hijacked
1970 hijack thwarted in mid air
1986 thwarted attempt to put a bomb on board a plane
1972 Japanese Red Army faction members opened fire at Tel Aviv airport
1985 Palestinians attacked El Al check in counters in Rome and Vienna killing 18
El Al flight 581 from Tel Aviv landed safely at its destination at 1930 GMT with 170 passengers on board, all unharmed.
The hijacker, who is believed to be an Israeli Arab, is reported to have tried to break into the cockpit and stab a stewardess 10 minutes before the flight was due to land.
He was restrained by flight marshals.
He is thought to have been acting alone and carrying just a pocket knife.
A Turkish airport official said the man was now being held in custody at the airport police station.
Tight security
No organisation has claimed responsibility for the incident.
El Al has tightest security of any airline in the world.
It is renowned for its strict procedures, having undercover agents on every plane and armed guards at every ticket counter.
The only successful hijacking of an El Al plane was in 1968 when a flight from Rome was hijacked by members of the militant Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and forced to land in Algiers.

RE: EL-AL Attempted Hijacking!!!
It’s not an absolute obligation. The hijack ended in Turkey right?
Therefore the Turkish justice might handle the case and send him to jail. I don’t know exactly what you laws are.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-11-02 AT 10:45 PM (GMT)]Isn’t that what they’re suppose to do? That’s what I read in the paper. He’ll just get interrogated twice. I wish the European community would do the same for Turkey’s terrorists..
