An EL AL cargo flight that took off yesterday from JFK New York heading for Frankfurt was compelled to make an unscheduled landing in Amsterdam as a result of landing gear problems detected after take off.
Amsterdam was chosen for the 747-200 landing since it serves as a central service centre fo EL AL Cargo planes in Europe.
Last week an EL AL jumbo with over 500 passengers was forced to turn around and land back in Tel Aviv following take off when a landing gear fault was detected.
There were no injuries in either incident.

…probably because they have some sort of arrangement with KLM engineering so it would be a sensible place to get it fixed. In the meantime another aircraft could be despatched to AMS to intercept the freight and get it home nearly on time. A gear fault doesn’t necessarily mean having to get the aircraft on the ground immediately so it pays to take the problem to a more convenient location.

Why did they cross the Atlantic if they detected the problem after take off ?

It sounds familiar. An El AL cargo crashed on a buidlding in Amsterdam back in the 90’s killing dozen of people.
