Elstree memories.

Could anyone provide me with information from Elstree aerodromes past ?
I remember on one of my frequent visits there ( between 1966 and 1968) when I was a lot younger 🙂 . I stopped on my motorcycle when I noticed a couple of Spitfires, one I think was a trainer, being readied for flight.
I was stopped by a gate and one of the pilots took the trouble to walk over to me and mentioned that I should move or the loose coke/gravel would fly around and hurt me.
Of course I did not take heed and got blasted when the aircraft started. Nice of him to warn me though.
My question is : can anyone tell me if they were Spitfires and which ones ? and if I am really lucky who the pilots may have been ?

Thanks everyone.

Stinger, I take it that you are aware of the excellent book that’s available on the history of Elstree airfield – it was published about 3 or so years ago and should still be available. The full details escape me at the moment, will try to find out and post again. It may contain a relevant shot of the Spits.

Thanks for the info’ Mark.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I am pretty sure they were in civil livery.
I also remember seeing a lot of activity at Bovingdon airfield around the same time, probably were making Mosquito squadron.

This spans the the filming and preparation for the ‘Battle of Britain’ film.

In 1966 you would have seen based here MH434/G-ASJV and two seater MJ772/G-AVAV in civil livery. Following the film and still in Film military livery just two Trainers MJ772/G-AVAV & joined by TE308/G-AWGB.

So were they civil or military?

Mark.
