Embraer

I have a few questions about Embraer. I am not too familiar with the company, so some of these may seem silly, but here goes:

1. Who is Embraer’s major competitor?
2. Is Embraer going to keep maufacturing regional airliners or is the company going to start producing aircraft that will encrouch on Boeing’s and Airbus markets for large aircraft?
3. The 195 is the largest plane in their line up, (I think). Is Embraer planning on designing a larger plane?
4. What is most comprable to the 170/190/195 line?

1. Who is Embraer’s major competitor?

As has been mentioned Bombardier with their CRJ line. Later perhaps Fairchild Dornier/D’Long Fairchild, whatever it will be called. Second hand planes should also be considered, mainly the F70/100 and the BAe-146/ARJ.

2. Is Embraer going to keep maufacturing regional airliners or is the company going to start producing aircraft that will encrouch on Boeing’s and Airbus markets for large aircraft?

Would that really be a wise thing to do? Do they have enough (financial) muscle to annoy Boeing and Airbus. On the other hand, the basic 737 design is showing its age and won’t last forever. This may be the best moment for quite a while to come to start such a project. Would they have enough money to do that as I suspect the 170/190 series costed them quite a few quid.

3. The 195 is the largest plane in their line up, (I think). Is Embraer planning on designing a larger plane?

No, nothing has been announced anyway. Please refer to my answer on question 2.
For the foreseeable future they will probably be quite busy with the 170/190 series. Even when the first deliveries are being made. New versions WILL come up, business jet/shuttle, various military tasks, longer range, more quiet etc.

4. What is most comprable to the 170/190/195 line?

The 170 can be compared to the B712 and second hand F70s and the smaller BAe-146s and ARJs.
The 190 with the F100, the larger BAe-146s and ARJs, A318, B736 and if it will ever be build the B713. The A318 and B736 are very heavy though! This will not make them as efficient to use as the 190/F100 and probably ARJ (don’t know for sure). For an airline requiring long range they will be very good, for airlines with extensive families of B737NGs/A320series too.

I was curious if Embraer was going to make larger planes, since their line up keeps increasing in capacity. Now I at least have an idea where the company stands. Thanks for the info.

I don’t know if my answers will be different but here they are:

1. Bombardier is their one and only competitor with the Canadair CRJ.

2. The next commercial boom after the completion of the 50 seat passenger jet era is the 75-100 seat jet. As we know, Embraer has announced it’s plans to develop aircraft to meet that need. I don’t think they’ll produce anything bigger beyond that, as there won’t be a need to with such a large market share of the 50-100 seat aircraft.

3. No need for anything larger now or in the future in my opinion.

4. For the EMB-170, the only competitor is the CRJ-700 which won’t stand up as well against the Embraer product. Beyond the EMB-170 the only competition is as ACA345 said, the Boeing 717 and Airbus 318 (with the A318 being the bigger threat). The EMB-170/190 family will have a great interest to those smaller companies who are looking for flexibility in a growing industry. There’s a good chance that a common type rating will be issued for the EMB-170/190 which will greatly benefit a company operating on “thinner” routes. The A318 on the other hand benefits those larger companies that are trying to get into smaller markets. It has the same benefit with the universal type rating for the A320 family but it only works for larger operators. So what’s my point? I don’t see the A318 being as much as a competitor to the EMB-170/190 as it seems to be. They might fit the same market but they’re competing for different types of airlines.

I dont know all the facts but ill give your questions a shot-

1.) I would have to say Bombardier, the only other could Fairchild Dornier( which at this point is not a major threat) Also, i belive a chinese manufacturer is producing an aircraft in Embraer range, i think its called the ARJ21.It seats also in the 70-100 range.( correct me if im wrong about this aircraft).
2.) I can see Embraer encroaching into the lower end of Boeing’s and Airbus’ range of aircraft. Although they may carry on with the RJ’s simply because they provide a good source of income.
3.) Sorry, dont know if Embraer is looking at a larger plane but IMO the 195 will be the largest production model for Embraer for the near future( no sooner than 2012)
4.) Well, the most comperable would have to be either the Airbus 318 or Boeing 717( this is pushing it though because the are in a larger weight range than the 170, 190, and 195 lines) and the Bombardier -900( although on the lighter side and not to mention less capacity). Please correct me if any of my info is wrong.

Hope that at least some of my info helps-

Matt
