Guernsey Airport was closed on Wednesday afternoon (8th March) after an Emerald Airlines cargo plane skidded off the runway.
Just after midday, the plane, inbound from Jersey, left the end of the runway ending up on the grass, stopping only 40 feet away from the instrument landing systems.
Simon Macphail from Guernsey Airport said: “There were only the crew onboard and they sustained no injuries.”
“Every effort is being made to remove the aircraft from the end of the runway and once that’s done we can then reassess the situation,” he added.
At 5pm (8th March), the aircraft was still stranded in mud.
The airport is now open but the number of flights leaving the island is still significantly lower than normal. Guernsey Airport’s Air Traffic Control Manager Ray Plant told Channel Online that Trilanders and light aircrafts are now able to leave the island but distance flights, even to the UK, are not yet leaving.
The delays are not only due to the Emerald aircraft but also foggy conditions – Some passengers due to fly out of the island have now been stranded for two days.
Second time in 6 days that Emerald have been involved in a landing incident in the Channel Islands, last Thurday an Emerald 748 burst two tyres duing a heavy landing in snow.
Todays aircraft was G-BVOV.

I always find it very strange how these things make it into the news
That’s because you don’t live on a small island where a cow crossing the road on its own is big new.
Guernsey has a short runway i think
4,800 ft, any longer and you’d fall off the end.

I always find it very strange how these things make it into the news when the majority of the time they pass without comment. Every day across the world aircraft are always leaving the runways and taxiways.
Yesterday there were at least 3 runway excursions, and that was just in the UK. This 748 on Guernsey, an Air Jamaica A340 at Heathrow, and the evening IOM service at Belfast. Happens all the time…
