There have been rumors of this for a while now but they are true now, Great News!!!:D ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) today (Wednesday) announced that a second daily service to Dubai, with Emirates, will begin operating on the 1st June 2005.
This additional departure from Birmingham, EK038, will depart at 2155 hours and arrive in Dubai the following morning at 0745 hours. The return flight, EK038, from Dubai to Birmingham will depart at 1545 hours and arrive in Birmingham 2015 hours. This new service, with its operating times, is ideal for onward connections to destinations such as Sydney, Brisbane, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Johannesburg and Nairobi. These flights will be operated by a state of the art 285-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
Commenting on the new service, Peter Vella, the Airportโs Business Development Director added: โThis new second service from Emirates is an excellent boost to the community and shows the demand that exists within the region for flights to the airlineโs growing hub in Dubai. With the later flight times this service opens up a new market with improved onward connections to the Indian Sub Continent, Far East and Australia. Emirates has chosen to expand its presence at BIA at an exciting time, with the addition of a second daily Continental Airlines service to New York earlier this year as well as announcements relating to new services to the Middle East and Asia.โ
Tim Clark, President, Emirates said: “When we launched our Birmingham route in December 2000, we knew it would do well, and so it has, in no small way thanks to the strength of our reputation and excellence of our in-flight service.
“Our expansion continues apace as more and more people want to experience Emirates’ award-winning customer service. Dubai offers both a fantastic destination – be that for tourism or commerce – and a perfect geographical point to break long journeys, with connections to countless other destinations that lie further a field on the Emirates’ network.”
Emirates second service complements the already existing daily 1400 hours departure operation between Birmingham and Dubai.

Its been very busy each time I’ve been on it, and in fact last time it looked like I had to go to DXB there was zero availability business class both on the day I was due to go and on a day either side! BHX was slated to go double-daily a while ago but lack of equipement resulted in a switch from A330 to 772 instead – now EK ar getting more equipment the dual 332 can go ahead.

Any idea what the loads are at BHX David?
I could imagine they are high with the B777 and now the twice daily A332 on its way.

EK have realised, like CO to the US, that there is good business to be had from the UK regions, IF they can deliver critical mass in terms of onwards connections to plenty of attractiv/popular destinations – relatively few of the pax on the DXB services are actually going there and most onwards connect even if they spend a day or two in Dubai on the way there or back.

MAN should be 772 from June on the EK17 and will then be 773 on the EK17 from late October. The 3rd MAN service will not happen for the time being so we can be entertained by a 772 or 773 on the EK19 in a couple of years time, just before EK17 is further revised.
Seems to me MAN is the only regional that gets “squeezed” by EK as they openly admited in the local press a couple of years ago that lack of aircraft stopped them from upping frequency from daily to 2 daily despite incredibly healthy loads (over 90%!); currently loads are tending toward the 90% mark again.

When the 772 was in at GLA a couple of weeks ago, it took over double the Cargo in and out that the A330 usually does.
Also, this is slated to happen just short of 1 year from now, with the UK winter period being the main travel period to and from OZ and NZ.
MAN is also apparently getting 773 along with the A332.

Wouldnt think there was that much cargo demand…besides are they not needed elsewhere?

Ah yes, I guess the B777 has a greater cargo capacity then.
Come to think of it, the flight must pull in a lot of cargo being the only non-stop from that area to Scotland. It has to be doing very well if they are double upgrading primarily for cargo alone.
Yes, I don’t think there’s a regular Dubai-Prestwick freight run either, although the Emirates Sky Cargo 747’s have been seen there for maintenance ?

Cargo figures I’m told.

Good news for BHX. Seems like EK is expanding rapidly with more services to the UK.
