Emirates starting Baghdad flights in November

Quite a high profile airline to be flying to Baghdad. Good news, I suppose it implies some sort of stability for the region, which is always good news. It is interesting that it is a three-class A330.

Emirates will launch four-a-week flights to Baghdad from November 13, marking the airline’s second Iraq destination after Basra.

The airline cited the Iraq capital’s geoegraphical location, 5m-plus residents and the fact few international carriers fly there as the principal reasons behind its decision.

EK941 will depart Dubai at 0755, arriving at Baghdad International Airport at 0940. At 1135, the return flight EK942 will depart Baghdad arriving in Dubai at 1455.

Services will by operated by a three-class A330 on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Emirates expects the passenger mix to be varied, with a significant skew towards industry (construction, telecoms and oil) and Government personnel.

The airline says flights to Basra, which began in February, have been operating at capacity in both directions.

The announcement provides further confirmation of Baghdad’s growing commercial appeal.

Last week Austrian Airlines restarted flights to the city after a 21-year absence.
