I saw a brief breaking news this morning about Amirates to buy 50 A350.
The announcement is due to LBG air show.

I’m already impatiently waiting for the point where those Arabian airlines announce that their region has a severe and unsustainable excess of airframes and seats.

Something like the untenable situation in the USA airline sector up until 11 September 2001, you mean?

It is interesting to speculate as to what would have happened within the US airline industry if the terrible events of that day hadn’t taken place.

Some airlines such as Qatar aren’t profitable (and basically don’t care) since they are financed by the oil $.

Maybe some other think the same.

I think you could be on to something there. Perhaps the Arab states are buying all of these fuel-thirsty jets to keep world oil demand high, and hence keep the price of oil up. Maybe over the course of an aircrafts life, it may even pay for itself in increased oil revenues!!! I have always wondered what they are going to do for money though when the oil runs out?

Buying hundreds of airframes and hoping that tourism and “business” can be expanded rapidly enough to meet the needs of their airlines is a strange tactic – I think. That Arabian airline business is totally overheated.

In the great location that these airlines are though you have to look at the wider picture, ie. how is the world market holding up. With the exception of Gulf Air a significant number of the seats available from these airlines are never intended to be used to take people directly to the home nations, they are used to provide feeder traffic to create hubs. So as I say, they need to decide how much more traffic they can pursuade to use their hubs/airlines as opposed to flying direct or through other hubs.

Currently they are in the state of “well, yes, the market is getting very competitive, but it’s THE OTHERS who will have problems, WE are the ones with the best ____________ (fill in the blank) and therefore we will grow and be profitable for the next 100 years!”.
And at some point in the future their tune will change. How many airframes do the Arabs think they can squeeze into their sandbowls? Buying hundreds of airframes and hoping that tourism and “business” can be expanded rapidly enough to meet the needs of their airlines is a strange tactic – I think. Now here’s the big question! Would this be Emirates, Qatar, Etihad or another airline such as Singapore. Time wil tell! Which ever way one wants to look at
it, Airbus might have a very good third quarter!

If you were a betting man, you’d have to put your money on Emirates

How is EK’s order a sure thing? Everyone thought that NW and Korean Air were sure bets for the A350 and yet, both airlines opted to move toward the B787?

The A350 was announced almost immidiately after EK sai “the 787 is too small for us”

Low and behold, the a350 will have more seats and more range*

EK and the A350 was a gauranteed thing.
The A350 was after all announced shortly after EKs “787 is too small” comment.
One hopes Airbus don’t have a Trident style affair on their hands.

(And before anyone jumps on me for that, I cite my reason being that 2 customers Airbus had been peddling the A350 to, using commonality arguments have gone for the 787)

As much as this could turn into another endless thread of various opinions as to whom deserves this order more than the other, it is interesting to know that Euronews announced that Airbus would be announcing an important order for 50 jets in the near future. The report didn’t elaborate as to which airline had placed the order or which model it concerned. This report was filed shortly after EADS made its first quarter report to its major shareholders.
Now here’s the big question! Would this be Emirates, Qatar, Etihad or another airline such as Singapore. Time wil tell! Which ever way one wants to look at it, Airbus might have a very good third quarter!

According to Emirates this is PURE speculation. Emirates have said:

“….the airline is continuing to evaluate the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 as well as the Boeing 777-300ER and -200LR for its mid-size requirements.

We have nothing to announce and no decision has been made. We are looking at the latest offering from both manufacturers.”

It follows a piece in the Sunday Times, and it is not clear where this came from.
