End of an era…

Not sure if anyone else knew this, but today (2nd) marked the last day of operations for Continental Airlines as a separate airline.

From tomorrow, all flights that were previously operated by CO will now use the UA flight code, and tickets will be sold using United’s 016 stock number, replacing the 005 that Continental used to use.

With the new United expected to take delivery of its first Boeing 787 in Q2 2012, there are defiantly some exciting times ahead, but let’s not forget that this day marks the end of an era!:)

Indeed -there seems to be a perception that Air Atlantique moved base frequently . The reality is the collection was established from 1985 at Coventry. In anyone’s book nearly thirty years. As to visitors to Newquay / Cornwall -the collection closes for the winter in October . I am sure that will allow for exhibit maintainance and refurbishment.

In all of the discussion on Airbase / Classic Air Force – the reality of how to keep a collection of classic aircraft together and make them pay for themselves seems to be lost on some. Mr Collett has been a businessman for a long time and I am sure the investment in time and money to make the Newquay move is considerable. Would he do this on the basic that it wouldn’t have a chance to succeed -I very much doubt it!

I’m inclined to agree. Everything I’ve read/heard about him seems to indicate a good buisnessmman with the sense to learn from his mistakes of which I imagine there may have been one or two.

On my next sojourn south i will excitedly await my table at the VC10 Diner!

Yep I have always thought of buying a Jet liner and opening up as a fast food business. What a great idea. People would travel thousands of miles for down to earth food without sky high prices.

Sorry folks, maybe it’s just me but a lot of this smacks of sour grapes. If you can’t do as well or better yourselves you’ve no leeway to criticise others who are at least trying to do something.

Never in the field of human conflict was one man so aptly named by so many to so few!

Nostalgair – Thankfully I don’t think Mr Collett will ever take take a leaf from your book ! I guess with no immediate candidates -the Boscombe BAC 1-11 would have joined the ranks of 1-11’s scrapped at Boscombe ! Add to the supply of VC-10’s exceeding demand -the Newquay VC-10 would also have been a candidate for scrapping at Bruntingthorpe ! Lastly the Nimrod is also a save from the scrapman -so yes it might well be parked at Coventry -there is a well established museum on site where it would probably be a good fit or in the long term even possibly a road move .

So whilst Mr Collett might well have upset a few people with his move of the aircraft from Coventry to Newquay -I wager that the visitor numbers at the seaside
have far exceeded metropolitan Coventry !

The Nimrod wasn’t given to Coventry -it was purchased by them from the Mod. Hows the Nimrod you bought doing?

Yeh great news, it appears Mr Collett has yet another large chunk of British metal he can leave to rot if things dont go well down in Cornwall for him. There should have been a clause in that contract. ‘you can have a VC10 once youve sorted a good home for the Nimrod that youve left rotting down in Coventry which we gave you three years ago!’.

Thanks Ed, you really need to do a wide circuit over EGNX as you go in as we never saw you today and she used to be a regular visitor… And I’m EX VC10 btw 😉

Mike it’s already back.

Sorry, I didn’t ask. Staish said: “planned arrival time at Bruntingthorpe is 11:00, so we will be leaving at about 09:45.”
