End of an era – another historic type goes…

The RAF retired it’s final Canberra T.4 trainer today at RAF Marham. This particular aircraft has been in service for 51 years, so today was a momentous, and rather sad day… 🙁

Enjoy…

I have them both delivered, driving into Chesterfield to the nearest newsagents that stock them is as pleasant as having a tooth extracted. 🙁

According to this month’s Aeroplane (or FP), they were slated for retirement in March 2006 but that’s now expected to be extended to the end of the year.

P.S. Ant, please correct the spelling of infinite in your sig. I spot it every time I see one of your posts. 🙂

As others have said,a sad day. I have to say I’m a bit surprised that the version used for conversion and currency training should be retired before the retirement date for the operational version has been finalised. Is there now a fixed retirement date for the Pr.9’s?Last I heard they were on a kind of rolling extension.

Some great shots there Dan.

There’s still hope, that aeroplane is even older than me – just. 🙂

Dan–

Lovely…What’s slated to become of VN799? One would hope she isn’t headed “smelterward”?

Can’t help noticing the VN-block serial. She’s a venerable bird indeed…there were late-mark Spitfires with VN serials! (Not to turn this into another Spitfire thread… )

Cheers

Steve

“VN799” is actually WJ874 painted to represent the prototype. It’s strange how they did this, considering the even the BBMF aircraft keep their genuine serials despite wearing historic schemes…

“VN799” isn’t her real serial. She’s WJ874 painted up as the Canberra prototype VN799.

As for the future, she’s up for sale! The guys at Marham hope she’ll go to a museum or a private operator, but there’s always the chance the only bidder might be Mr Scrapman… 🙁

Beautiful aircraft and great pics, didn’t realise the RAF still had T.4’s until recently, sad to see them retired before i got to see them 🙁
