I don’t think the MD11F has an advantage over the 747F, per se. I just think airlines such as LH Cargo and FedEx are stocking up on 2nd hand MD11’s and converting them to freighters because they are considerably cheaper to purchase than a 747F of equal or lesser age and still have years of service left in them.

Just to further add to this whole freighter discussion, the beauty of the freight industry is that they don’t have to fly say, LAX-SYD non-stop. Freighters make a tech stop in Anchorage, or in the Pacific somewhere, and that’s ok. Most humans prefer to fly non-stop, parcels don’t care, which is why the MD11 is a great freighter. Some of the routes it wasn’t able to fly as a pax plane, it doesn’t have to as a freighter, thus taking advantage of it’s large cargo volume.

Spot on GD!
The only time MD/DC posed any threat to Boeing was with their DC-8 many years ago. Boeing were finalising plans for the 707 and then the DC-8 was released. As a result the 707’s fuselage was widened slightly to allow 6 abreast seating, originally it was planned for 5.

Back on topic, The MD-11 was never much success as a PAX liner. Most airlines that used them for Pax have got rid of them in a fairly short space of time as opposed to other aircraft.

But, she makes a brilliant Cargo plane. With the wings so far back theres is plenty of room up front to maneuvre loading equipment without the risk of damaging the engines and such. I’m not sure about the range in a cargo config. But it must be adequate as FedEx own a nice fleet of MD-11F’s, aswell as UPS.

The MD-11 is sure to be in our skies for many years to come, albeit it in a Cargo role.

In freighter configuration, performance decreases anyway, even for the 744, so then it wasn’t a factor for the MD11 in that standard.

Although the MD 11 was initially posing a threat to Boeing sales…..so they bought it off.

How do you guys explain that the MD11 wasn’t a big success as a PAX airliner and is a big hit as a freighter?

I flew on the Md11 in August 2002 from MAN-ATL-MAN. They were great aircraft, more roomy than the 764 I flew on from ATL-LAX. Does anybody know whats replacing them on the MAN-ATL route?

Cheers

I couldn’t see such young airframes being used for fire training or scrapping, they would have to be utilised as freighters somewhere, or indeed parked in the Mojave Desert until new owners are found
