Engine remains I.D?…sea recovery

Can anyone ID the partial engine remains in the attached photos? Not much to go on I realise, other than it is an in-line V, WW2 vintage..R.R. or D.B. maybe ??

This recovered from the sea by a fishing vessel off the SE coast of the Isle of Wight recently. I am told that the whole thing complete with prop was hauled up, but the forward section with prop broke away during the lift.
It is hoped to recover the rest in due course, any clues / info greatly appreciated.

If it is a 601 then it will have come from a 109 Emil or a 110. Almost certainly a BoB relic.

Looks like it went in hard, probably under full power into the sea.

I had a P-38 Lightning prop which had been dragged up off the IoW around 20 years ago. It was in excellent condition.

Many thanks for the info, will pass this on to the ‘finder’. I was told that the prop was in very good condition, thought to have been buried in silt, rather than just sitting on the sea bed.

Interesting if is infact a 601, BoB relic perhaps?

Will post further pix if anything else is recovered.

Thanks again, Chumpy.
