Err, no. What a relief! Reading the following you would have thought we had lost something really important:
Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt told BBC Sport he was “absolutely devastated. We would have delivered simply the best World Cup for 2018 but congratulations to Russia. It’s absolutely gutting. A very sad day, a heart-wrenching day for our country.”
Mmm – a heart-wrenching day for our country. Perthaps a sense of perspective is required!! And if he is devastated by this I would hate to think how he would react should tragedy befall a member of his family, for example.

I have to agree with Alan Sugar’s thoughts on football players…
“Scum, total scum. They don’t know what honesty or loyalty is. They’re the biggest scum that walk on this planet and, if they weren’t football players, most of them would be in prison, it’s as simple as that.”
It’s only a daft game – not life or death. How these cretins get elevated to their god-like status is totally beyond me, and for one I’m very happy the World Cup will be held elsewhere…

Well, I like football. I don’t go anymore because I can’t afford it.
I like the World cup. I like the Olympics (Warm or Cold).
But the issue here is the rigging and bentness of the FIFA committee. The decision is not based on merit, which it is actually supposed to be. And that French idiot Blatter has to go. He’s taking more brown envelopes than any of them.
At least Borris has stood firm and cancelled the free Hotel rooms the FIFA c’tee were to be given for the 2012 Olympics.

I agree. There’s a lot in what pagen01 says.
But Qatar????
Well I’m not suggesting that FIFA are clean here (as in other over sized and out of control sporting bodies, eg F1), and I can’t help thinking your earlier point about money may ring true with that decision, with a dash of ‘why not’ thrown in. Just because the place is hot and not on most peoples holiday lists dosen’t mean it shouldn’t win a bid to host the world cup.
My point really is we rely on our image too much to achieve things, which we think is great, but our recent record suggests otherwise.
If FIFA does have a certain way of playing, maybe we need to consider playing that game?

they are saying the media ‘lost’ it for us……
Well, of course, they are……….

I also wonder if our smug percieved greatness in the world isn’t quite what we hope it to be. Many assumed that we had this in the bag because it’s ‘our game’ and we sent a top footballer, a PM, and a Royal to the presentation, while Putin didn’t even bother going. Maybe it’s time to look at our own self image and performance in previous football internationals instead of lashing out about shady dealings within FIFA.
Quite agree, let’s just give it all up as a bad job, we always lose anyway….

Nicely, and pertinently put.

Was sort of hoping Afganistan would have got it…….
TV coverage would have been poor…………..
Something to do with the telly ban.

Apart from our own, we only got one other vote? What is this, the Eurovision Song Contest?…..
My thoughts entirely. I’ll try to be careful here to not break the house rules but did our media ask too many questions about the accepted standards in other countries?
I’m doing a course in politics at the moment and one thing that has come out of it is that in some areas of the world it is considered normal to pay for assistance. You offend if you question this.
Was our medias timing not in the public interest and should any questions relating to how business is done been handled a different way? Is the wikileaks way a bit too much of a blunt instrument.
Yes I am ‘gutted’ to use a football term. Would have prefered it to the Olympics personally.

Do they have grass?
I don’t know.
They do, however, have enormous sums of money.
Which is nice.

Thankyou God.

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what Russia and Qatar have done in getting the World Cup.
By: bookman - 2nd December 2010 at 21:59
Football.
All this responce to who kicks a ball around on who’s bit of turf, does it really matter?? Watching the snow melt is more interesting. It would be so much easier to go out and buy a BIG CUP.

What with the wedding next year and the olympics the year after having a further 6 years of roundball build up would do my head in.
I still remember the Rugby World cup, now that was good and is a decent sport.
