English Electric Lightning's 50th.

Does anyone know of any plans to celebrate the English Electric Lightning’s 50th Anniversary next year in the UK?

Stringbag, They did manage to get hold of a Buddy pack for XW987, but I am not sure whether it works or not.
Barry did ask me if he could have a copy of my Pod manuals, but until I have a complete list of what he removed from XX894, I will continue to stand firm on not helping them anymore.

Thunder City looked into getting a refuelling probe for one of their Buccaneers to enable it to feed the Lightning on any possible return to the UK.
They were having immense trouble locating one a couple of years ago, and it’s possibly still the same now.

is it really the anniversary next year?? I always considered the P.1B to be the first real Lightning – the P.1A’s were well not quite
but getting there.

Good shout. That’s a far better use of money at Bruntingthorpe than … erm… oops, wrong thread… 😀

That’s more like it…….I presume that LPG have touted around all the big construction/steel fabrication firms to see if any of them would ‘sponser’ the re-erection of the sheds in the same way that Trafalger House donated the sheds and their dismantling…???

On the ‘other’ point, I don’t think in this case it matters what the CAA would say to this idea as from a logistics point of view alone it’s got to be a non-starter….

ThunderCity aren’t going to take XR773 apart again and ship it here…….

And to fly it back with the Lightning’s range would be a nightmare without doing it with AAR, so I think you can dismiss this idea. Yes, I know that originally Barry and Keith had formulated a plan to fly ‘773 and ‘693 to SA as a one way trip, but to do it both ways would be pushing it in the extreme, unless the MOD offered to deploy it’s fleet of VC10K’s at appropriate locations along the route…….somewhat unlikely I feel…….

Hi All

Can’t see the CAA letting the thunder city lightnings anywere near uk airspace. I have been told that cockpitfest are trying to have a lightning gathering this year but this is the only thing i have heard about so far. Lets hope there are more things to come

No, but wouldn’t it be great if the CAA were to allow a guest visit by Thunder City’s single seater?

Has anyone even thought to ask if a very special exception can be made for this extremely important Cold War jet?

Would Thunder City be interested?
