Here is an interesting film/video produced by the Public Information Office showing the Lightning in flight and on the ground with rocket loading and engine change. The film lasts for five minutes.

100 years plus cataloguing experience between us maybe…
Suitably back in my box them………
So you don’t think a recruitment film can be seen as a piece of propaganda then?
It’s a recruiting film – what do you expect? A full and frank discussion of the shortcomings of the Lightning F1? Propaganda? I tend to save that for ‘Triumph of the Will’ kind of stuff – you could see almost anything as propaganda if you really want, if your definition is lose enough. The East Germans used to look on BFBS television as propaganda, East Enders and Corrie bringing the decadent west into the comradesβ homes

Discovery wings recently aired 3 hours of this kind of footage (inc the lightning one) with an hour each for the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Fantastic stuff and yes, I zapped it all to DVD π

Oh and, I do not believe any of us in the Film and Video Archive who catalogue material have media studies degrees…100 years plus cataloguing experience between us maybe…
And for every film that might have a comment from the cataloguer that bites, there will be at least two films with a positive analysis from the cataloguer…

Propoganda? It’s a recruiting film!
No, someone with a dry sense of humour…
So you don’t think a recruitment film can be seen as a piece of propaganda then? Not a criticism, I am genuinely interested in what you think on this (and others too)

It may be of interest to you guys (and gals!) to know that the IWM holds what I remember to be the originals of this item made for the COI, which have been recently restored: http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpcgi.exe?AC=GET_RECORD&XC=/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpcgi.exe&BU=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.iwmcollections.org.uk%2FqryFilm.asp&TN=Uncat&SN=AUTO32368&SE=1042&RN=0&MR=500&TR=0&TX=1000&ES=0&CS=1&XP=&RF=FilmResults&EF=&DF=FilmDetailed&RL=0&EL=0&DL=0&NP=1&ID=&MF=&MQ=&TI=0&DT=&ST=0&IR=36731&NR=0&NB=0&SV=0&BG=0&FG=0&QS=
Albert…there are a number of Air Ministry/COI films available on DVD, maybe this one will be added to the list one day…

Thanks for that Newforest – great stuff! Why oh why doesn’t someone market these Air Ministry films on DVDs? Did anyone notice the ground crew put the wrong intake blank on XM143 after it landed?

Brilliant its so sixties, had to laugh at the snipet of the film showing the No2 engine going back in, shows how easy it was prior to RR adding an extra stage and not lengthing the engine bay, it then became a shoe horn job, see below
No 2 engine going back in 904 in 2004
Thanks π

I have looked through that archive before and some of it is quite funny, but i had not seen that lightning film before, here is my favourite one about the birth of the jet engine and how engineers think we will have jet powered trains.

Excellent – have to love the music and the narrative speaking – makes it sound like a car advert from that era!
