Just a quick question on the enhanced Paveway with LGB and GPS guidance.
Can the weapon switch mid flight?
For instance, high cloud cover, with a target designated by ground forces.
I understand that GPS is less accurate than laser guidance. So would it be possible for the aircraft to drop the munition using GPS guidance, and then, when through the cloud cover for it to pick up the laser designation and home in on that?
I can understand that it could be difficult for the seeker to pick up the designation at the last minute, but if it is pointed in the right direction already…

^My bad. I was lumping together all the laser/EO guided PGMs.
So basically the new Paveway combines the functions of laser and GPS guidance? If inducted it’d be a nice companion to the EGBU-15 then…

Spice does not use SAL guidance. It has an imaging EO seeker operated via a datalink.

So it essentially combines the features of JDAM and laser guidance kits like Spice?

The final test in the programme to clear the weapon for use involved a drop in which the weapon initially used GPS guidance after release, then made the transition to laser guidance while on its way to the target.
