Read from CMF, about the introductions of JH7A. I t was believed the upgradeing process was still on going and focus on grond attack capbaility.
For long time JH7 was described as an anti ship missle carrier.Since she lack of the terrian floowong radar. This defeciences will be correcyted after a series of Russian made guided weapons like the KH31 and KH59 missles will be introduced. But I wonder Chhina can do alot more. Since Russian Air to ground weapons has a uncertain accuracy due to their quality. China should adopt guided weapons from other sources like the Popeye missles was comparable to the KH59MK missles as being a standoff weapon. Until now, Russia was willing to provide anti ship model for exports to China’s Su30MKK.
Another major problem was the engine of RR Spey Mk202. Or the Chinese dulpicates known as WS9. Actually the Spey were those ‘residuals’ of RAF Phantoms fleet. The RAF Phantom fleet were scrapped in 1992,and UK still have some remaining engines for exports, but I doubt their reliability.
There was some sources suggest AL31 or Scenma M53 maybe alternatives.
For my view, they were outb of question. Because JH7A was a ground attack plane not air superority fighter, it does not require such hi powered engines to meet the thrust weight 1:1. Even Tornado did not has such ratio.
The JH7A was the same class as Tornado and Su24. It was stay between those two planes. The Su24 was powered by AL21 turbojet and has no fly by wire controls as these two features exist in JH7A. What the JH7A need would be reducing her weight and enhancing payload and ranges. Also better avionics can enhacing her survivability.
PS:Also it didnt adopt the sweep wing design was geinious, through it wasnt practical after 1970s
