Call me a grumpy old fart if you like, but is it only me who finds it intensely irritating to see the word “enjoy” whenever someone posts a photograph? Is this an order? It is as bad as those people on the radio who say “listen” every time they start talking. The fact that they are making a noise with their larynx means that we cannot help but “listen.” Enjoyment is a matter of personal preference, not an edict.
OK, I’ll crawl away and get back under my stone now.

But what if someone isn’t looking for comments, but is just posting the photos for other people’s enjoyment?
Then there’s no point in saying anything is there?

“Enjoy” is a piece of social lubrication, just like saying “hello” when you meet someone. “Enjoy” doesn’t really mean anything and nor does “hello”. The former is simply a means of communicating “I’m finished now” on a positive note, in the same way that the latter is a means of initiating communication on a positive note.
Is there a better alternative than saying “enjoy”? Sometimes I request comments at the end of a post, maybe that’s more meaningful. But what if someone isn’t looking for comments, but is just posting the photos for other people’s enjoyment? 🙂

In effect, people are merely quoting from “The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy”, whereby all the doors on the “Heart of Gold” spaceship insist upon you having a nice day, something like: –
“All the doors on this spaceship have a cheerful and sunny disposition. It is their pleasure to open for you, and their satisfaction to close again with the knowledge of a job well done.” Upon closing they usually say something like “Enjoy” or “Have A Nice Day”.
It is supposed to be satirical, I believe. Blame the great late Douglas Adams.

Oh God – I was responsible for that. Once. Then realised how naff it was!
Mind you, better than saying ‘Here’s my photos, they’re $hi*te!’
Is suppose the ‘Enjoy’ bit is a bit of cliche. Is there a naughty corner for that?
