Erickson Aircraft Collection, Madras, Oregon

Some photos from a recent visit. Personal highlight for me was seeing the Bellanca Aircruiser – what an unusual aircraft! What also struck me was the small, almost fragile, appearance of the Dauntless when compared with the other carrier-borne aircraft around it. All the aircraft are airworthy except for the Martin Mauler and P-39.

Yes TJ – there appear to be 3x Oregon DC 7 a/c still on the active register (registered to a related company in Hillsboro,OR)

2017 has been a really bad wildfire year out in the western USA,here is a video showing an Erickson DC7 (Tanker 62)dropping on the Mariposa,CA fire in july 2017 (at approx 22.00) also DC10 + C130 (at 44.45) dropping.

So, do they still operate the DC-7, or is it just stored? Apparently the Neptunes are being retired so that does not bode well for the 7 and other piston powered heavies.

Probably the same reason why people take mangled bits if metal that have peacefully layed about for 70 years and and re-assemble them into a Spitfire “…it might have been for a couple of years in WWII”. 🙂

Seriously, some fire bombers have been preserved (like the Grumman Guardian at Pima and many multi- engined types) and I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t some Avengers in storage that haven’t been re-converted into warbirds.

So often these hard working aircraft just get overlooked. It’s about time there was a few more old ag aircraft in museums.

Well done that man.

I just don’t understand why a museum wants to convert a perfectly good TBM Air Tanker into something it might have been for a couple of years in WWII.

Agreed – like many light, civil aircraft of its generation I expect it’s rare to find a preserved example. It was really nice to see it there –

It’s a nice collection, I saw most of it when it was housed in the lib blimp hangar in Tillamook. Always fun to see a Thunderbolt and a Duck.

The Neptune is very stock, and it’s still an occasional flyer, at least they flew it to Madras from Tillamook.

And although it won’t general much interest here (because it’s American and civil) it’s good to see a Grumman AG Cat in a collection. A very useful tool in feeding the world and unique in a biplane being produced concurrently with supersonic fighters and by the same company.
