Essence of Old Warden…..

I was just thinking it might be interesting for everyone to post just one image, which for them encapsulates the essence of Old Warden. I’ve posted it on Historic because it doesn’t necessarily have to be from a display, just something which sums up Old Warden for you.

Here’s my offering taken yesterday.

The Essence of Old Warden

Old warden is a truly wonderful place. Old Warden could easily be considered to be the definition of aviation, and this includes model aviation too. Some of my best times have been at Old Warden model aviating and so i choose these as two pictures that sum up the essence of Old Warden.

Don’t think I can quite match the standard of photography here but where else in the world could you see this…..

MAGIC!

I was thrilled by the Edwardians – I was expecting a few Bleriotesque straight-up-and-straight-down flights, not the happy trundle round the Bedfordshire sunset we got. Next year I must take my Dad – to see them go up tiddly up up and down diddly um down!

I’ve been stuggling with new PC, hence my lateness…

This is amazing – I opened the pack of photos and went “How the hell did I take that?”

Then I twigged… My SLR is getting on, and every now and then the shutter goes when I wind on. THis was one of those – anyone for a pint of serendipity? 😀

That’s John Blake doing the commentary – one of the best! 😉

Just about THE best IMHO

Lovely photos. When I first looked at the thumbnail of 92fis’s Lysander photo, I thought it depicted some old men playing lawn bowls! Or perhaps cricket. It looks like either very English passtimes would not be out of place in the gentle pace of of life at Old Warden.

I’m afraid that I don’t know who these folks are, but you get the impression they know their old aeroplanes don’t you? 😀

I’m glad i decided to venture to Old Warden this year for the first time, It has a nice atmosphere and the flying is great. Couldn’t really find a picture to sum it all up but the one i’ve chosen just shows a few of the many people that make it all happen.

Misty mornings at an airfield – unbeatable.
I love the ambience and during my time in the RNZAF, especially at Wigram which was at that time our grass training field.
Crisp frosty early mornings with the promise of a clear day, opening the hangar doors and looking inside – man how I loved those days.

great thread Kev.. problem was when I looked through my snaps I realised I’ve not taken that many at Old Warden, the reason being as its the one place where I tend to just sit back, have a chat and watch the aeroplanes..
anyway, going with the theme of ‘those that make it happen’ heres a couple of ‘pushers and pullers’… 😀

Here’s mine.

I was talking to Karen, one show day, up in the old offices above Hangar 1, and I looked out of the window. The Boxkite was going around on its circuit, and just by chance, and just for once, many of the essential elements lined themselves up. I think Karen thought me very rude to have been staring out of the window when we were mid conversation, but then most office windows don’t have a view like this!

Don’t ask me which year it was – it’s the old control tower, and there’s a few other clues of course, but there’s Chris as Bruce suggested, at the centre of it all. One of my all time favourites.

Hi Bruce,
Absolutely. Chris’ hat is like other men’s pipes – something to fiddle with when he’s thinking. And with a job like his ther’s a lot of hat lifting and scratching required!

For the main theme, I have a particular image in mind. Just got to find it!

Hmm, I think the essence of Old Warden has to include Chris, his hat, and possibly the SVAS Transit somehwere in it!
